from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

With Oskar Sundqvist still not practicing, Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde is thankful to have the Michael Rasmussen suspension over.

"(Rasmussen) helps, Lalonde said. Theres a huge difference. It spreads your lines out. On paper thats your third center. Thats a big difference from what weve looked at the last couple of games....

If you go back to the game it was going to be a tough matchup period, because they have four extremely talented lines and we got exposed a couple of times, Lalonde said. That home change, them able to get (Tage) Thompson out on same favorable matchups. At least you get to manage that at home. I thought for the most part we were able to do that (at home) against Minnesota.

Lalonde said there is no timetable for Sundqvists return. He is simply listed as day-to-day.

Its an upper body injury thats not long-term but its obviously kept him out, Lalonde said.

more on the Wings...

Paul

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Driving to the rink that June night in 1997, Detroit Red Wings star Nicklas Lidstrom remembers not the opportunity, but rather the building excitement in the anticipation of that moment.

As he and the rest of his Red Wings teammates were arriving at Joe Louis Arena, so was the most famous trophy in hockey. The Stanley Cup was in the building, and for the first time since 1955, the Red Wings were in with an opportunity to win it.

I remember going down to the rink before the game, Lidstrom recalled. You could feel that there was something special about to happen.

Even though you cant really go in there and think youre going to win for sure, you could sense there was some electricity in the building. Fans were so excited about being that close to winning the first Cup in 42 years.

Paul

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Coach Derek Lalonde said defensive-zone breakouts were an issue.

Puck play in whole, he said. We went from Saturday where we only turned it over 21 times an entire game and then we were in the high 30s, low 40s.

Wed like a little poise, a little patience, a little more help. Everybody kind of wanting the puck. Even through some of our success early on, those D-zone breakouts were a little above league average. Its a point of emphasis well continue to work on. A lot of times on turnovers people look at the person with the puck. A lot of times its the help he gets away from the puck. Id like to see us a little bit better as a group with those....

Lack of discipline also hurt in games against the Sabres and Bruins, when they were shorthanded 11 times combined, allowing five power-play goals. They took only one penalty against the Wild.

Thats not managing your game, Lalonde said. Youre giving yourself no chance when youre giving up seven minutes on the power play. It drains players, it gets our lines screwed up. Theres not much flow to it. We need to get back to where we were Saturday.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
