Next up is the Wings need to have their roster set by 5pm ET on Monday.

Team stats

Game highlights have yet to be posted but I will add them when available. added 10:57pm, Game highlights are below.

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News had this to say in his game recap.

The Red Wings assigned goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the minor-league affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

Cossa, the Wings' 2021 first-round draft pick (15th overall), played in two exhibition games, stopping 20-of-21 shots. Cossa also played well during the prospects tournament in early September, igniting a stretch of fine goaltending.

The Wings have sent Cossa to Grand Rapids, but it's likely Cossa will wind up in Toledo (ECHL).

The Griffins have Olkinuora and Brattstrom on the roster, and each is likely to remain there. Brattstrom ended last season on a positive note in Grand Rapids, while Olkinuora, who starred for gold medal-winning Finland in the 2022 Olympics, was signed by the Wings to provide organizational depth.

Cossa, 19, would get the majority of the starts in Toledo.

Would they rather he play in Toledo or Edmonton with his Oil Kings squad from last year? I have no idea the comparative levels of competition, but ECHL is men.

I read they dont believe he would be challenged or progress by playing at the same level again.  They want him in professional leagues.

from Nate Brown of Detroit Hockey Now,

Filip Zadina had a grade A chance on a Detroit power play midway through the third period. Inexplicably, he was unable to finish what should have been an easy goal. Later on another power play opportunity, Zadina looked timid with an opportunity to feed Jakub Vrana for a chance on the doorstep. In a contest where the 2018 sixth overall pick was one of the players with a secure spot playing, the same nagging bewilderment on the inability to finish.

Detroits power play had five chances and all five came up empty. There were chances, but the inability to set things up along with the lack of a sustained attack doomed the man advantage all night long.

After a strong showing Friday night, Joe Veleno had his hands full with the best of the Maple Leafs players. He had nearly seven minutes on the power play and nearly two on the short handed unit.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Söderblom is still learning how to protect the puck better, but for a guy getting his first taste of the smaller North American ice sheet, he has drawn attention for the right reasons and shown he is a quick learner.

"Everything is faster," Söderblom said. "I think every player is smart as well, so you have to be fast in your head, make fast decisions. I think Im getting the hang of it. Im just going to keep working on playing with my size and use it to my advantage. There are not a lot of forwards as big as I am, so I need to really, really play with the size that Ive got and keep working hard and pay attention to small details, as well, listen to all the guys and take in as much as I can and be ready to play at the NHL level."

Söderblom's immediate future hinges on where Yzerman sees the best opportunity for development. Söderblom, part of Yzerman's first draft as Wings GM in 2019, has the body to excel as a net-front presence especially on power plays, but the Wings already have Michael Rasmussen and Adam Erne in those roles. So then the decision, or balance, becomes a matter of weighing where Söderblom is better off starting the season.

Soderblom may wind up in G.R. to start the season, but more than likely will be called up during the season.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
