Video- Juraj Slafkovsky Suspended Two Games For A Hit On Matt Luff

11/09/2022 at 3:01pm EST

Luff will have surgery tomorrow and expected to return in 10-12 weeks.

NEW YORK (Nov. 9, 2022) – Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky has been suspended for two games, without pay, for boarding Detroit Red Wings forward Matt Luff during NHL Game No. 203 in Detroit on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 14:26 of the third period. Slafkovsky was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Slafkovsky will forfeit $10,270.28. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Sure, makes sense. Great work as usual.

I guess Ras should have gotten his money's worth and knocked the dude he hit out for 10 weeks, rather than just tapping him on the visor with his stick.

No way was what Ras did anywhere near equal to that hit.  The NHL should adopt an eye for an eye rule.  You put a guy out for ten weeks, you sit for ten weeks.

"You put a guy out for ten weeks, you sit for ten weeks"  The glaring problem with that rule is then you would have some marginal guy up from the AHL take out McDavid a la Bobby Clark

TreKronordwgs

Seriously no worse than the way it is now.  You don't even need to get an AHL player to come in and do that, just any little goon can wreck a guy's season and only get 2 or 5 or (if incredibly egregious) 10 games.

The other night Tkachuk poked Quick's eye with a stick.  What did he get for it?  2 games.

A few things:

1.) Guys from the AHL want to be in the NHL. Getting suspended for ten weeks kinda sorta cuts against that goal.

2.) If a team/player did that on purpose, it would be pretty plain to see, and possibly a criminal assault. (See, Todd Bertuzzi)

Steebbezukov

There are plenty of AHL guys who know they'll never make the bigs, so they may be open to coming up to run somebody and spend some time getting a NHL paycheck.

I think poking a guy in the eye with your stick is pretty plain to see, too. That's a deliberate attempt to end Quick's career. The PA needs to be reminded that they represent the VICTIMS of these things, too, not just the offenders.

Lefty30

Such a terrible hit. There is no sense of proportion in the NHL. And its worse that a journeyman who has already battled injury has up to three months wiped out just as hes showing hes a depth option. Hopefully this at least means three months of an NHL salary. Seems like Montreal has decided to embrace a lot of borderline plays as they rebuild. But this was just senseless and so dangerous. Two games isnt going to send much of a message to correct that.

Cigar-Nurse

They should not allow a player to replace the offender on the teams roster. The team then is short a spot for the duration of the suspension.

KateCigar-Nurse

That would be appropriate. Just as suspending the player for the length of time the injured player is out. Something has to be done as this kind of thing will eventually end a career or worse.
