Trading Gustav Nyquist And The Rise Of Andreas Athanasiou

11/26/2018 at 8:38am EST

Ansar Khan of Mlive answers some fan mail,

Q: Will the Wings re-sign (Gustav) Nyquist? If not, what do you think they can get for him in a trade? I know they won't get as much as they did for (Tomas) Tatar because (Nyquist) is a free agent, but how high a pick can we get?

A: I highly doubt he'll be re-signed. He's in the final year of a contract that has a $4.75 million cap hit and would probably cost around $5 million a season to keep. Regardless of the cost, the Red Wings have several young forwards either on the team (Michael Rasmussen) or in their system (Filip Zadina, Evgeny Svechnikov, Joe Veleno, Jonatan Berggren) they'll need to make room for over the next few years.

The going rate at the trade deadline for a rental player like Nyquist typically is a second-round pick. I've heard the Red Wings will be seeking a player (maybe a prospect?) in return for Nyquist since they have 10 picks in next year's draft, including a pair of second-rounders. We'll see.

continued with more questions like who will Ericcson replace in the lineup...

from Max Bultman of The Athletic,

It’s not just the speed. It’s the anticipation.

For as much as Andreas Athanasiou’s game is built upon how fast he can go, the experience of watching him play has for so long been about what that speed could lead to.

What he could do on a given play, if he just gets an inch of space. What he could become in his career, if just a few things come together. What both could mean for the Red Wings.

That has been the case since Athanasiou entered the league in 2015, a raw talent but an undeniable one. After once being in first-round consideration for the 2012 NHL Draft, he slid to the fourth round due in part to the same consistency questions that have followed him in Detroit.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
