from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
Here is a breakdown of the top defense prospects. All can play, but this week will determine who is the most NHL ready.
Dennis Cholowski
He has shown tremendous improvement over the past year, partly as a result of how dedicated he has been in the gym the last two summers. He’s a smooth skater, and a heads-y playmaker with a knack for getting his shot through to the net from the point — something the Wings need. He’s a heads-up player who can put a lot of heat on his shot but he’s also smart enough to know when a pass is a better option. Of the four, he is the most well-rounded and the most poised. Cholowski, 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, does need to continue to get stronger, which will help him do a better job holding people off physically down low....
Libor Sulak
Another guy who has shown improvement since last year. The Wings signed Sulak as a free agent in spring of 2017, with the understanding he’d spend the second year of the two-year contract in North America. He spent 2017-18 in the SM-liiga, the top hockey league in Finland, where he had 32 points in 42 for the Pelicans. He appeared in two games for the Griffins. Sulak, 6-foot-2, 189 pounds, looked good for the Czech Republic at the 2018 World Championship, where he had three points in eight games and was out against opposing top lines beside Gudas Radko. At 24, Sulak has the most experience of the candidates, having played at the pro level in Europe....
