from Max Bultman of The Athletic,
Since it’s doubtful the Red Wings will be taking on any significant new NHL contracts in the next two weeks, I’ll interpret this category to be more about the future cap than the present. As it stands, if no moves are made, the following deals are slated to come off their books this summer:
Niklas Kronwall at $4.75 million
Thomas Vanek at $3 million
Gustav Nyquist at $4.75 million
Jimmy Howard at $5.29 million
Nick Jensen at $812,500
Luke Witkowski at $750,000
That’s a total of nearly $20 million, with the potential for a bit more if they choose not to extend a qualifying offer to Martin Frk. There’s also some potential long-term IR relief for Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. So Detroit should have flexibility no matter what route it takes.
Now, every vacated roster spot will need to be filled, and that costs money too, but many natural candidates (Filip Hronek, Evgeny Svechnikov, Filip Zadina) would be on highly affordable entry-level deals. What happens in the next two weeks, then, will be the first hint at exactly how much space the Red Wings will have...
much more (paid sub.), broken down by topics like what the Wings have to offer, what they need and who to target...
