from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,
Not sure I can remember so many NHL head coaches ever potentially being on expiring contracts.
There are 10 such coaches, although some of them have option years for next season. But still, that’s nearly a third of the league!...
Jeff Blashill, Detroit (not confirmed, but believed to have option for next season): When the Red Wings announced they had agreed to an extension with Blashill last May, they did not announce contract length.
I have not been able to confirm this, but I believe it was a one-plus-one contract, so one year plus an option for next season. If that’s the case, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has another decision to make after this season.
Yzerman inherited Blashill three years ago when he was named Wings GM and kept him on board for what looks like a promising rebuild. But whether Yzerman feels Blashill remains the right guy behind the bench as the Wings take their next step? I honestly have no feel for it. Tough to tell. Blashill has been behind the Wings bench since June 2015.
