The Quarterfinals Are Set At The World Championship

05/23/2023 at 4:59pm EDT

from Steven Ellis of The Daily Faceoff,

What a night to close out the round-robin.

After over two weeks of grueling action every single day, the men’s World Championship’s preliminary round finally came to a close on Tuesday, and it was a doozy. The highlight of the night was seeing Latvia — who needed to get the game to overtime at the bare minimum to advance — beat the previously undefeated Swiss squad to win 4-3 in front of a packed home barn. The scenes were wild, the game was crazy, and it was everything Latvia was looking for.

The best game of the day might have been USA’s 4-3 win in overtime against Sweden. USA held a 3-1 lead at one point, but the Swedes fought back and forced extra time. It was there that the Americans closed it out with a win, earning top spot in Group A in the process....

So, now this is where things get interesting. Here’s a look at the four quarterfinal matchups for Thursday in Riga and Tampere:

Switzerland vs. Germany – 9:20 AM ET (Riga)
USA vs. Czechia – 9:20 AM ET (Tampere)
Canada vs. Finland – 1:20 PM ET (Tampere)
Sweden vs. Latvia – 1:20 PM ET (Riga)...

Carter Mazur (DET) is a highlight-reel machine. He put the puck between the legs to create a rebound opportunity on the power play for Conor Garland (VAN), who capitalized. He then set up the game-winner in overtime to give him a multi-point effort. Mazur’s creativity around the net has been on full display in Tampere, and he’s been a big contributor in a middle-six role for USA. You just have to love the effort.

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Here is what some mock drafts are projecting for the Red Wings at No. 9...

NHL.com

No. 9: Zach Benson, 5-9, 163, LW, Winnipeg (WHL)

Adam Kimelman wrote: Benson was the leading scorer (98 points in 60 games) on the best team in the WHL during the regular season, one that featured two first-round NHL draft picks, (Morgan) Geekie and Matt Savoie. His work ethic is one of his best assets, and hes fearless when it comes to going to the dirty areas to produce offense.

NHL.com

No. 9: Oliver Moore, 5-11, 188, C, USNTDP

Mike Morreale wrote: Moore has elite speed and is a potential top-line NHL player someday; hell attend the University of Minnesota next season. Its possible hes moved to wing at the next level, but he did have 75 points (31 goals, 44 assists) in 61 games with the NTDP. The left-handed shot had nine points (four goals, five assists) in seven games for the United States at the U-18 Worlds.

Sportsnet

No. 9: Barlow

Jason Bukala and Sam Cosentino wrote: The lasting impression of an average performance at the U18s notwithstanding, this player will score goals and wear a letter at the next level. Might not do it right away but could fill the void left by Tyler Bertuzzis departure. Barlow makes sense for the Wings. With Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp signed for several more years, and Marco Kasper beginning his NHL career, adding a goal scoring winger to complement the entire group, including Lucas Raymond, is a wise decision.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Judging from this first month of the offseason, there might be quite a few teams the Wings might be able to work out a deal with. And a long list of star players to sift through to acquire a bona fide goal-scorer, something this roster needs....

Alex DeBrincat, Ottawa, right wing: A restricted free agent, DeBrincat will earn about $9 million if the Senators qualify him, then it'll take about that much annually to keep him (he's unrestricted in summer of 2024). The 25-year-old Farmington Hills native saw his production dip to 27 goals and 66 points, but the Wings have the cap room to accommodate him. But again, would Ottawa trade within the division?
Clayton Keller, Arizona, right wing: The Coyotes have an uncertain future in Phoenix after the recent arena deal lost in the voting booth. Keller has expressed disappointment, and you wonder if the Coyotes would consider moving this 37-goal scorer who has five more years left at a $7.15 million per cap hit. Keller is only 24. You'd imagine the trade package headed to Arizona would be monstrous, but the Wings would have to listen.

Kyle Connor, Winnipeg, left wing: The Clinton Township native is a regular 30- to 40-goal scorer and is only 26. But Connor still has three years left on his deal at $7.1 million per, and the Jets aren't likely to engage in too many discussions regarding a core piece like this.

I just do not see how DeBricant is worth $9 mil per year. He has been scoring 40 goals playing with Kane in his prime. We do not have Kane in his prime. 27 goals he scored last year is what I would expect from the Cat going forward. I do not think he brings much else to the table. And we will have to give up players/assets for the "privilege" to pay him $9 mil.

Great to hear how well Carter Mazur is doing.Hope he keeps improving and we see him in Detroit red sooner, rather than later.
