According to an NHL source, as long as the current regime is in charge, Zetterberg won’t be asked to waive his no-trade clause if a contending team asks about him, out of respect for Zetterberg and his contributions to the franchise. That’s not to say they wouldn’t honor his wishes if he ever asked for a trade out, but that’s highly unlikely. As he said earlier this season, he wants to retire with the Red Wings.
His friends want him to do so as well.
“He’s had such a great career in Detroit,” Lundqvist said. “I would like to see him end it in Detroit. It’s a cool thing to just play for one organization. We’ll see what he decides to do.”
