The Detroit Red Wings projected Ryan Kuffner, a strong skater with a good shot, as an NHL scoring winger after signing him out of Princeton in March.
But while fellow college free agent Taro Hirose of Michigan State made a strong impression late in the season, Kuffner did not have an impact, with no points in 10 games while averaging 10:56 in ice time.
Hirose is expected to earn a roster spot in training camp. Kuffner might need some time with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins....
The Ottawa native is spending the summer in metro Detroit, living with Patrick Holway, a defenseman the Red Wings drafted in the sixth round in 2015, who’ll be attending Merrimack College in the fall. He’s skating three times a week and training with the likes of Dylan Larkin, Luke Glendening and Darren Helm.
“I think a big thing for me this summer is just being here, being with the guys, doing everything we can to make it a competitive environment because that’s only going to make us better,” Kuffner said.
“It’s a lot of fun and it’s fast-paced. So, I think it’s different in that sense, that working with staff that I haven’t worked with before and I’m just trying to put myself in a position to learn from them.”
