DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Alex Biega to a one-year contract extension.

Biega, 31, was acquired by Detroit in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 6 in exchange for left wing David Pope. Biega has appeared in 48 games with the Red Wings this season, notching three points (0-3-3), 24 penalty minutes and 53 shots on goal in 16:20 average time on ice, while ranking third on the team with 111 hits and sixth with 45 blocked shots. Over the last month, Biega has logged an average of 19:38 time on ice, ranking third among the team's defensemen since Feb. 6. The 5-foot-10, 199-pound blueliner has totaled 227 NHL games with Vancouver and Detroit since 2014-15, registering 39 points (4-35-39) and 188 penalty minutes.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
