The Detroit Red Wings, sooner or later, will have a decision regarding Gustav Nyquist's future.
He has one year remaining on his contract. Do they try to sign him to an extension, which likely would cost more than $5 million per season?
This team is trying to rebuild by stockpiling draft picks and moving in younger players. It would like to shed as much payroll as possible over the next couple of years. Signing a player who turns 29 on Sept. 1 to a lucrative deal could be counterproductive.
That's why the Red Wings are likely to try to move Nyquist before next year's trade deadline. A source confirmed the club will try to deal Nyquist or Tomas Tatar before this year's deadline (Feb. 26).
It's far from a sure thing, mainly because Nyquist has a no-trade clause, giving him control over where he goes, or even if he goes.
