Quick Recap- Wings/Islanders

11/05/2022 at 3:36pm EDT

The 3-0 win over the New York Islanders today by the Wings may have been their best game of the season.

They played physical when they had to, good defensive structure and great goaltending. Have to believe 'Newsy' will be happy with this win.

Back at it tomorrow at 5pm ET from MSG.

Team stats

Detroit goals are below.

I will have a post up in the next 24 hours with all the highlights from Celebration weekend.

I have some grievances, but they are outweighed by the fact the Isles did not score.  I am just glad that Varly is ok - the protocol disrupted the game - but as an outsider, it was impressive to see how the Detroit Red Wings have improved.  While Husso was very good, I felt the Detriot D was more impressive.   If you have a chance to watch the #Isles feed - they just retained a former player (Thomas Hickey) to take the place of Anson Carter who has relocated to Atlanta as the analyst.  By a factor of 3 or 4, Hickey is the best analyst I have seen on an Isles broadcast.  Two reasons, he must have had media training.  Many of the others who share the role over the years (Mark Parrish, AJ Mleckzko, Jen Botterill and Rick DiPietro) all looked like deer in headlights when they first started.  AJ shares this job with Thomas and all of them are media pros now.   (DP on radio now)  Hickey explains the game with commentary and facts that borrow heavily from his recent playing days in the NHL.   He credited Detroit with 40+ blocked shots and 23 missed shots (some were forced as he explained) as being the difference.  The Isles could not get pucks to the net because they were blocked.   He explained this effort was more DET winning than the Isles playing poorly.  I agree with Thomas Hickey.  I hope he gets a shot someday as the color guy on a broadcast.  He is able to point out tendencies of guys he played against.  One comment he made that I found interesting in the post game show - was that how teams tend to kill off penalties which are "good" penalties....and not so much for penalties which were 'fair"   - there was a letdown.   Teams were more motivated to kill off a penalty - for example - where a player took 2 mins to defend a teammate - keep your eyes out for Thomas in the future.  He is goooood.

My analysis - It pointed out the lack of a good PP and lack of an elite sniper.  The shorthanded goal was a tough task for a cold goalie coming in to replace a player taken out by the spotter for protocol.  Varly was pissed off about being removed by the spotter in the post game interview- but Hickey said that protocol is done for player safety and its a good practice.

I feel for Zadina - he blocked a shot and as I read here on Kukla's Korner - not well for him.  I wish him a speedy recovery.

Warming up in the practice rink was weird.  Both Thomas Hickey - and then Lane Lambert - said they had never seen this before.  No impact on the game itself - but it was strange.

Isles are 3-1 vs Metro 0-4 vs. Atlantic and 5-0 vs. Western Conference teams.

I hope you post the pre-game ceremony.  We could not see it in NY due to blackout -  It's important to honor the past and I would have enjoyed seeing that ceremony.  Lots of history there and I am happy that the fans who went got to see it.   Hockey is such a special sport and generally honors the past well.   The Isles showed Jimmy Devellano in the box with Scotty during a stop in play.  He is still revered here on Long Island.

Tomorrow  - i will be cheering on my favorite team - the Detroit Red Wings.  Why is this?  The Islanders are my second favorite team.  My favorite team is whoever is playing the Rangers.  WIN TOMORROW TOO!
