Nate Brown of Detroit Hockey Now, It was Zadina who boldly proclaimed that he would fill the net with pucks against teams who passed him by during the 2018 NHL Draft. Zadina, slotted by many to be the third overall pick, slipped to Detroit at six. Hindsight has written a revisionist’s history that Detroit should have taken Quinn Hughes. Detroit did need defensemen desperately, but the pick was celebrated at the time by fans. In fact, many couldn’t believe the good fortune that the Red Wings stocked up with Zadina, Joe Veleno, and Jonatan Berggren with their first three draft picks.

Ansar Khan of Mlive, “He’s still growing in the D-zone. Even today (in practice), he got lost a few times in our D-zone coverage, which is understandable. We want to work with him on that. I just think having that big body is something that’s a little different than a lot of forwards we have.”

Ted Kulfan pf the Detroit News, Whether Sundqvist will be ready for Friday's season opener remains to be seen.

"The four days (between games) here is going to allow us to see if Sunny is available and where he's at," Lalonde said. "A couple of bodies could slide in (to the lineup spot)."

Lalonde said it'll be important to develop Soderblom and Veleno both on the power play, and in Veleno's case the penalty kill, to increase their minutes and continue development.

I dunno, I was skeptical about the whole Zadina thing from the beginning. Not least bkz I'd never heard of him before they said his name on draft day. Now he's hurt (to some degree) in a very competitive field for ice time. I find myself wondering now if his 3-year deal makes him more or less easy to trade.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
