Moritz Seider is not going to get pushed around as a rookie. He is more likely to dish it out.
The 20-year-old Detroit Red Wings defenseman, in addition to his strong defensive play, crisp puck-moving and offensive instincts, has played with an edge.
Seider demonstrated as much during one shift during the third period of Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, bring the Little Caesars Arena crowd to its feet.
He started by crunching Garnet Hathaway into the boards. Then he dumped Hathaway again behind the net. When Nic Dowd took a retaliatory run at him in the corner, Seider stood his ground and knocked Dowd on his rear. That triggered a melee that led to off-setting penalties.
“He’s got a definite toughness to him, a physicality side to him would be the way I would describe it,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “If you search the Internet, you’ll see a loop of huge kind of (Niklas) Kronwall-type hits last year in the Swedish Hockey League. I think he’s got to get stronger and thicker to do that in the National Hockey League, but he’s got that edge to him for sure and he can punish people from a physical standpoint.”
