Mathias Brome Gets His Point And Up/Down Players

02/22/2021 at 6:33am EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Mathias Brome hadn’t scored in 17 games, hadn’t earned a point, but he didn’t panic.

Brome is 26, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Red Wings, and has played professionally in the Swedish Elite League

He’s been through scoring slumps. And although frustrated, Brome knew he could get out of this one.

“I’m pretty old, I know a little how it is to have (scoring) chances and not to score,” said Brome after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Florida in which Brome scored his first goal, turning out to be the game-winner.

“I had the same thing when I was back in Sweden my first year in the SEL (Swedish Elite League) and I had 13, or 14, or 15 games without a point there,” Brome said. “But I know it’s going to come when you create chances.

“You’re more worried when you don’t have any chances. But I created a lot of chances and today it went in, so I’m real happy and I’m glad we got a win.”

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Here are three players whose stock rose during the week, and three whose did not:

Three up
Jonathan Bernier:
Jeff Blashill expressed hesitancy about relying on Bernier as much as the Wings did over the weekend, given Bernier had just come off an upper-body injury the previous week. He cleaned up the last two periods of Friday’s mess and starred Saturday as the starter, making 38 saves on 39 shots. The Wings sometimes make it hard on their goaltenders because of sloppy coverage, but Bernier has a .910 save percentage and 2.74 goals-against average in eight appearances.

Three down
Anthony Mantha:
Mantha had no points and a minus-4 rating in four games over the past week. He should be way more noticeable for a guy who is 6-foot-5 and can skate the way he can. Mantha signed an offseason deal for four years and $22.8 million. His $5.7 million cap hit is the second-highest for a player signed by the Wings. (Marc Staal has the same AAV, but he was acquired in a trade.) Mantha hasn’t performed to expectations, with nine points and a minus-9 rating in 19 games.

more (paid) in the up category are Fabbri and Brome, in the down are Greiss and Nielsen...

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
