Marty Pavelich skis a hundred times a year at age 95 and aims to continue doing it when he hits 100.
Skiing is his passion. Hockey is his claim to fame. Pavelich played on the Detroit Red Wings’ four Stanley Cup championship teams in the 1950s.
He moved to Big Sky, Montana in 1993 and was instrumental in getting that town of 3,000 residents its first hockey rink. It will be named the Marty Pavelich Ice Rink during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday.
“I’ve been here 30-some years in the northern part of our country and no hockey. I said this is ridiculous,” Pavelich said. “I called the local sportswriter, took him to lunch and said how about writing something about hockey? He started writing about hockey and now we got two enclosed rinks in Bozeman and over 1,000 kids playing hockey and the same thing happened here. I thought we got to give these kids an opportunity.”
Chris Peters of Flo Hockey breaks down the 18 forwards on the WJC Team USA roster.
Red Savage, C, Miami (DET): One of the returnees from last years team, Savage is a bottom-six center who is going to get some tough matchups and be a thorn in the side of the opposition. He plays with some speed and gets his nose dirty often while also being pretty solid at the faceoff dot. Hell likely be a staple of USAs PK.
This is marvellous.
