Why Acquiring Petry Makes Sense

Veteran Presence
The Red Wings’ defensive play was ugly last season. Petry is a 12-year veteran with 803 regular-season games on his resume. When he’s playing well, he’s a poised two-way defenseman. He has been a consistent performer for a very long-time. Although he finished with reduced production last season, he played more like himself after the Habs switched to Marty St. Louis as coach.

Filip Hronek Might Be Moved
Since Detroit’s season has been over, there’s been a rumbling around the NHL that GM Steve Yzerman may move Filip Hronek in a deal to land a No. 2 center or another proven scorer. With Seider instantly playing like a No. 1 defenseman, Hronek seemed unsettled by his new role last season. If Hronek is moved, the Red Wings will need another defenseman who can move the puck. Petry totaled six goals last season, but had 56 over five seasons coming into last season.

Why Acquiring Petry Doesn’t Make Sense

Not a Long-Term Fit
He’s 34, and turns 35 this December. He is 11 months younger than Marc Staal. Petry’s best years are behind him. Petry will likely be retired when this Detroit team is ready to contend.
