Jakub Vrana Enters Players Assistance Program

10/19/2022 at 6:02pm EDT

TORONTO/NEW YORK (Oct. 19, 2022) – The National Hockey League Players’ Association and National Hockey League announced today that forward Jakub Vrana of the Detroit Red Wings will be unavailable to his Club for an indefinite period while he receives care from the player assistance program of the NHL and NHLPA.

Under the terms of the joint program, Vrana will continue to be paid while receiving treatment. He will return to the Club when cleared for on-ice competition by the program administrators.

Vrana’s care will be administered pursuant to the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

Man.  This is the big tIme for him to grab that brass ring and now this.  I wish him the best but the timing sucks.

Cigar-Nurse

Sorry to hear this news. I guess well get the details in due time.

In the first two games, Vrana seemeed to have kind of a "wild eyed" look on his face when he came off the ice. Hopefully he gets the help he needs.

So here's Zadina's big chance. But he's going to have to do better than he did on Monday because he didn't look "composed" out there at all. Thank the stars Soderblom has stepped up and carved out a spot for himself.

Now the question is, will they bring Veleno back up or let him hone his skills in GR? Or maybe this is the time to give Berggren a shot at playing on the second line. Interesting development.

That's a gut punch.... Don't care what he's in for, what matters is that he's made the decision to get help. Hope he gets it and comes back better.

Or, unfortunately, it appears the decision was made for him. Still hope he gets the help he needs. On the upside, at least this makes it look like the NHLPAs Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program cares more about the health and well being of their players than the Department of Player Safety does...

redwingrob

I am proud of him for entering the program and really hope he gets the help he needs. The wings depth is turning out to be critical The idea of how incredible he can be with the monkey off his back (whatever the monkey may be) is intriguing. But I know the team will be ok with the new lineup. And when we get him back it will be like a huge pickup. But first and foremost I really hope he gets the help he needs!

dcaredwingrob

He didn't enter voluntarily according to the release. It said he has been placed in the program.

Big difference.

League drug/performance enhancing tests for things and other things show up.  Player gets put on leave for personal reasons and is forced to see a league doctor. League doctor has the power to force a player into the players assistance program.

vs

Player enters voluntarily.

Well I hope the best for him and that he is able to return to the NHL, he surely can play. Now missing Bert, Vrana and Fabbri who all can put the puck in the net.

damndogrevenge

Wow. What a bummer. Hopefully he can get through his situation without to many pitfalls. Prayers for the young man.

I wonder if the Wings call up Jonatan Berggren. Being down Lil' Bert and Vrana, it seems logical.

From the Hockey News:

Vrana's case is somewhat different, as the NHL says he was placed in the program rather than entering voluntarily. But all hockey fans can hope for is that Vrana finds the help he needs in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life both on and off the ice

Chet

It could be anything. I wish him only the best and hope we get him back when hes ready. It doesnt matter what your job is or how much you makewere all still human. Hopeful for him.

bigfrog

Certainly strange, but hoping for the best for him.

Lefty30

Yep. Just wishing him the best as a person, first and foremost. We all know how electric a game-breaker he can be on the ice. I was hoping having a couple Czechs (three) in the lineup might offer even more assurance and support which might elevate all of their games. And I know many of us were hoping Vrana might be good for Zadinas confidence offensively. Ironically Zs opportunity is now perhaps enhanced by whats hopefully only a relatively brief absence. But you never know whats going on in someones life, no matter how successful and talented they are on the surface. And signing a few quality forwards is looking even smarter in the meantime.

My issue is "entering voluntarily" vs "has been placed in.

"Via testing if a player is found to have a dangerously high level of a narcotic or cannabinoid, he is subject to mandatory assessment by doctors working for the NHL and NHLPAs Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program. Those doctors could decide to refer him to mandatory substance-abuse treatment. The assessment and referral arent meant to be disciplinary procedures, but they are mandatory."

So it could be something minor....But coming originally from the Washington Capitals gotta wonder if cocaine was the issue

ChillDistillerdca

Placed in Assistance for high level of cannabinoids? What a joke. Its fine if the league has rules against its use, but rehab? GTFO.

Did the Wings call up a bunch of players with Bert and now Vrana out?   Sat down for a Griffins game last night hoping to see Simon, Berg, even Giavani, and they were not dressed, forwards ok, but Simon was odd, anyone know?
