Ansar Khan of Mlive answered a few questions from the fans. The first question was about adding a quality center and veteran defenseman.
The Red Wings again will have ample salary cap space, and the pool of unrestricted free agents, according to capfriendly.com, looks deep today with the likes of forwards Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary), Nazem Kadri (Colorado), Claude Giroux (Florida), Filip Forsberg (Nashville), Vincent Trochek (Carolina), Bryan Rust (Pittsburgh) and Andrew Copp (Rangers), and defensemen John Klingberg (Dallas), Kris Letang (Pittsburgh), P.K. Subban (New Jersey) and Mark Giordano (Toronto).
Copp, an Ann Arbor native who went to Michigan, would be a good fit, but he might re-sign with the Rangers. Many of these players likely will re-sign with their current clubs before free agency starts on July 13. Those that remain might be hesitant, in the prime of their careers, to sign with a rebuilding team that’s going to finish some 30 points out of the final playoff spot.
Had they finished strong and competed for a postseason spot, that probably would have helped their recruiting efforts.
