Ansar Khan of Mlive opens his mailbag,
Q: Who’s going to be paired with Nedeljkovic in net next season? Any chance they fast-track (Sebastian) Cossa or (Victor) Brattstrom? Re-sign Greiss?
A: Brattstrom isn’t anywhere close to being NHL-ready, as his statistics in Grand Rapids show (4-7-2, 3.72 GAA, .885 save percentage). Cossa is playing well with WHL Edmonton (26-6-3, 2.34 GAA, .913 save percentage), though he has taken a step back from the 2020-21 season, which would be virtually impossible to replicate (17-1-1, 1.57 GAA, .941 save percentage).
Cossa, 19, will need a couple of years of development time in Grand Rapids. It’s difficult for any goalie, even the 15th overall pick, to make the jump from juniors or college right to the NHL. Among previous Red Wings goalies, Jimmy Howard needed four years with the Griffins and Petr Mrazek two-plus seasons in the AHL before reaching the NHL full-time.
It’s doubtful they’ll re-sign Greiss, 36. Unless Yzerman can pull off another Nedeljkovic-like trade, they’ll need to sign a veteran free agent this summer. Options might include Ville Husso (St. Louis), Pavel Francouz (Colorado), Anton Forsberg (Ottawa), Braden Holtby (Dallas), Casey DeSmith (Pittsburgh) and Joonas Korpisalo (Columbus).
more goalie quesionns plus this...
Q: Where does Jakub Vrana slot into the lines when he returns? If everyone stays healthy, it’ll be interesting to see who gets bumped out of the top six.
