from Max Bultman of The Atletic,
Usually, most of the proposals included in the mailbag are lopsided — some hilariously so. That’s part of the fun, and this version is no exception. But every time, there are two or three ideas that really make you think, even if they’re still not likely to come to fruition. That’s true this year, too.
So, without further ado, the 2021 offseason “Who says no?” mailbag.
Detroit trades Bertuzzi to Toronto for Alex Kerfoot and Travis Dermott
Because Bertuzzi’s name has been connected with the Leafs, many fans’ proposals revolved around Toronto. Kerfoot and Dermott are both good players in their current roles, but they’re not the kinds of pieces that are going to entice the Red Wings to move a 26-year-old top-six winger, even as an unsigned RFA. Detroit says no.
Detroit trades Bertuzzi to Toronto for Rasmus Sandin and a second-round pick
The future-based return in this proposal is more in line with the Red Wings’ direction. Sandin is a good young defenseman who hasn’t yet been an NHL full-timer but might become one right away if he stepped into the Red Wings’ left side. He’s also played on the power play in Toronto, which is something the Red Wings need organizationally. In that sense, you can see the logic in the abstract.
