DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today assigned left wing Elmer Soderblom to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Soderblom, 21, has recorded five goals and three assists in 21 games with the Red Wings during the 2022-23 season, including a four-game point streak (2-2-4) from Dec. 21-31, which included the game-winning goal on Dec. 31 against Ottawa. The 6-foot-8, 246-pound rookie forward has also skated in two games with the Griffins, making his AHL debut on Dec. 9 at Springfield. Soderblom had a breakout campaign in 2021-22 with Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, ranking among the team leaders with 21 goals (1st), 12 assists (7th), 33 points (3rd), seven power play goals (1st), 11 power play points (4th), eight game-winning goals (1st) and 132 shots (1st) in 52 games. He also produced nine points (6-3-9) and a plus-five rating in 11 Champions Hockey League games as Frolunda reached the semifinals of the competition. Additionally, Soderblom recorded six points (3-3-6) and a plus-six rating in nine postseason contests to help Frolunda reach the SHL playoff semifinals. In all, Soderblom compiled 38 points (24-14-38) and 11 penalty minutes in 90 SHL games and won a CHL title with Frolunda in his first professional season in 2019-20.
Bert coming back sooner than expected?
Hopefully he will be back in Detroit soon. There are some other slugs who could afford to miss a spot instead of Elmer.
Who would you sit?
Erne to start. Suter to follow
Erne or Suter's spot will be taken when Bert returns, from there, the Wings need someone to play on the PK.
Elmer could do with some AHL conditioning, playing a more physical game (whether he wants to or not). He's good at using his size and reach, but could be a lot better.
A log jam at forward and a kid being sent down in favor of underperforming vets like erne.
Oh the times they are a changing....
Are you saying the tie goes to the vet? It is a man's league.
Joking aside, Erne's 7 minutes will turn into a spot in the pressbox when Bert returns, unless of course Yzerman makes a trade, but...
After the trade deadline, we will be out of the playoff race and the youngsters will be playing.
I am curious what they are going to do with Bergrren as he is objectively one of the best forwards on a team.
They mentioned during the game on Saturday that Berggren had been told he can move his belongings from GR to Detroit. So he's there to stay and deservedly so.
I can't see a situation in which Berg plays another game for Grand Rapids, outside of rejoining them for say a playoff run once the NHL season is over. He's here to stay.
