from Max Bultman of The Athletic,
So while the presence of Dylan Larkin, Frans Nielsen, Valtteri Filppula and Luke Glendening makes Veleno’s odds of doing the same rather long, his tournament so far is showing promise in perhaps the two areas he most needs to as he states his case.
It also surely can’t hurt that he has spent so much time this summer around Detroit, where Veleno mentioned closely watching Larkin’s willingness to learn and take extra reps. Matter of fact, you could probably count Larkin as another source of inspiration for a player making an unexpected push to the roster in his second season as a Red Wings prospect. (Although making a habit of comparing anyone to the Red Wings’ best player is a dangerous road to go down.)
For now, though, most of that is still hypothetical.
What’s concrete: Veleno is playing responsibly, shooting quick and scoring in bunches. If he can keep that up, he’ll at least give himself a shot.
