The Detroit Red Wings’ top line has shown flashes of dominance, the final few weeks of 2018-19, at the start of this season and on Sunday to help the team stop a ridiculously long skid against a division rival.
Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi combined for 11 points in a 5-4 shootout victory over Tampa Bay at Little Caesars Arena, snapping the Red Wings’ 16-game losing streak against the Lightning.
“They get lots of opportunity, so they need to play like a top line, and they did that,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “When we’ve had success over the last couple of years that line has been a big part of it. Two games in a row they’ve played pretty good. I think there’s still growth there, but they’ve done a good job and they’re going to have to the rest of the way for us to be a good team.”
The Red Wings (17-48-5) won back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 7-10. The Lightning (43-20-6) were missing stars Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman due to injuries but are virtually locked into second place in the Atlantic Division.
