The Detroit Red Wings picture Moritz Seider as the anchor of their defense for years to come, surrounded by a cast that includes Filip Hronek and the likes of Albert Johansson, Antti Tuomisto, Jared McIsaac and William Wallinder.

They hope their group of young veterans in Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi soon will be joined by the likes of Filip Zadina, Joe Veleno, Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren and Lucas Raymond to form a solid core of forwards.

But who will be in goal behind this potential team of the near future?

That position is much more difficult to project.

The Red Wings have Jonathan Bernier, 32, and Thomas Greiss, 34, as stopgaps. They have drafted several goalies over the past few years and hope one or two separate themselves from the pack as potential NHL talent.

Jan Bednar is their latest goaltending hopeful, their eighth pick, selected in the fourth round (107th) in last month’s draft. The 6-4, 196-pound Czech native was slated to play for Acadie-Bathurst in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League but remains at home awaiting travel clearance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
