The Detroit Red Wings will have eight prospects representing five different nations participating in the World Junior Championship.
All of them might not reach the NHL, but it is another promising sign for the future and a credit to their drafting the past two years.
The tournament starts Sunday and concludes on Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
“To have eight players is a lot, and to have them diversified with the five teams is good as well,” Shawn Horcoff, Red Wings director of player development, said. “It’s a good sign towards our drafting and the fact that we’ve had lots of picks, especially higher picks.
“It’s an important tournament. It’s on the world stage, it’s a high-stress environment for them, a really good experience for them to go through. We’re always happy whenever we get any number of guys there but it’s always a good thing to have a number like eight.”
