Detroit Prospect Otto Kivenmaki Needs To Develop

07/30/2019 at 2:31pm EDT

The Detroit Red Wings’ 10th and final selection in the 2018 draft raised eyebrows, not because of his skills, but due to his weight – 137 pounds.

It wasn’t a misprint. Otto Kivenmaki, a 5-8 center from Finland, really was that light.

A little more than a year later, Kivenmaki has gotten stronger and added weight. He’s up to 154 but still has a ways to go.

Ordinarily, a player selected 191st overall would receive little attention and have a slim chance of reaching the NHL. The odds don’t favor Kivenmaki.

But the Red Wings took a flier on him because of his talent. They’re working to develop him.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
