The Red Wings realized they made the right choice when Bertuzzi, with his combination of skill and grit, won the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as Calder Cup playoff MVP in 2017, when the Grand Rapids Griffins won the AHL Championship.

Bertuzzi has reaffirmed the organization’s decision in his first full NHL season, with 21 goals and 47 points....

What prompted the Red Wings to select Bertuzzi where they did?

Longtime Red Wing Kris Draper, an assistant to general manager Ken Holland, pushed hard for Bertuzzi after watching him in the OHL playoffs.

“One thing I loved about him was his compete,” Draper said. “He just seemed to be a competitive kid, and then when you start throwing out projections, you’re hoping he’s going to get stronger, work on his skating, get faster. As he’s gotten older, he’s done all of those.
