At The End Of A Long Day, The Detroit Red Wings Are Satisfied

10/08/2020 at 3:38am EDT

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Detroit Red Wings hope to look back on their 2020 draft and say quantity translated into quality.

The club made multiple trades Wednesday during the second day of the draft, acquiring three additional selections. They came away with 12 players over two days, their largest class since 1993.

Their success will be determined over time, but after selecting winger Lucas Raymond fourth overall on Tuesday, a player they believe has elite potential, the Red Wings feel they addressed several needs by adding five forwards, five defensemen and a goaltender.

from Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit New,

It’s one thing to be active, and the Red Wings have no choice. It’s another thing to be proactive, and Steve Yzerman is barreling ahead, moving up, moving around, moving as quickly as possible.

In the past week, we’ve seen all sorts of crafty, smallish deals, the ones that eventually lead to biggish deals. When the Wings wrapped up the two-day NHL draft Wednesday, they’d completed four trades to add three picks and selected 12 players, including high-upside scoring winger Lucas Raymond at No. 4. They stocked up at every position while mining their preferred hockey port, Sweden. If draft picks are lottery tickets, Yzerman went to the corner store and bought a bunch of scratch-offs with possible high payoffs.

Barely a week after the team he led for eight seasons, the Tampa Bay Lightning, won the Stanley Cup, Yzerman showed what he plans to do, without really saying it. Ask him if there are specific traits he seeks in young players, his answer: “Yes.” Ask if he can expound on those traits, his answer, with a smile: “No.”

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Wake up, the NHL Entry Draft is finally over.

And the Red Wings are happy with that fact – and the way it turned out for them.

In a draft that lasted approximately seven hours – which has to be some sort of second-day record – the Wings added 11 players to forward Lucas Raymond, who was drafted Tuesday in the first-round.

"That was a long day, wasn't it," said general manager Steve Yzerman of the marathon day. "Fortuntely we had 12 picks so we were relatively busy through it all. All of you that stuck around, I commend you."

The Wings added two picks after making trades with Minnesota, Vegas and St. Louis during the day — although the Vegas traded netted a 2022 fourth-round pick — and gave themselves the larger number of draft picks they need to accelerate and bolster the rebuild.

Yzerman, after a long day, was pleased with the way it ended.

from the Detroit New,

The Red Wings' 12 selections — tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for most in draft — over the two-day event generally netted Detroit positive reviews from national analysts, including an "A" grade from from J.D. Burke, a columnist for Elite Prospects' EP Rinkside, and a B from ESPN's Chris Peters.

Similarly, Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report gave the Wings a B-plus.

Burke and Peters each wrote the Wings' bevy of picks helped stoke their grade.

"The Detroit Red Wings made two of my least favourite picks in the draft," Burke wrote, "and they still walk away with one of the best grades of any team to leave the last two day’s festivities. That’s what pick volume can do for a team."
