He'll be UFA this summer.
Elliotte Friedman mentioned he just received a call about this. More coming.

No trade in place at this exact moment in time for James van Riemsdyk. #Flyers

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
Why?
When I saw the headline that exactly what I said
I had a feeling this was gonna happen. JVR had a good run for a little while there. He could be good for us but we seem a little crowded at wing.
Better have picks coming back to Detroit as a salary dump
d'oh deal's off I guess.
Saw that. Maybe they thought they could flip him quickly.
Pending a physical… lol. Made up for excitement at the last minute.
Friedman says on Sportsnet, says something is going on, Wings may have another deal cooking.
I triple read it when I saw this was potentially coming...got to be a flip/flip/flip and one of the puzzle pieces disappeared.
Keep the draft picks
It’s some kind of three way trade if it happens at all.
Or it’s a salary dump and somebody like Zadina was gonna go the other way?
So it looks like Yzerman SCREWED himself with the Vrana trade!
If he was trying/planning to retain on JVR, yep.
Seems that way. Mentioned it in the thread
The only part of this which would have made sense is if it was a flip and the Wings were retaining salary, but we are out of salary retention spots, so that wasn't even an option. Otherwise, I can't understand why we would give up anything for him. I'm sure we won't get anything from Y about what the deal was, but it'd be interesting to know.
Sounds like JVR went nowhere. Wonder what happened—did the Wings forget they were already retaining 3 salaries? Physical?
If they forgot they were at the salary retention limit, that would be very bad.
Wings should get Troy Stetcher back this summer
And Patrick Nemeth.
Man, this is just a sad, sad trade deadline day for the Wings.
Well, in losing Bert and Vrana, yes. However, the trade for Hronek was a huge win over Vancouver; we essentially got what they gave Bo Horvat away for in exchange for a hot D-man who is going to get very expensive in one year. That could have led to a Chychrun but it can also lead to a fairly early pick in the 1st round. Vis a vis Bert, he wasn't gonna sign, so we got a 1st there. There's just as equal a chance he resigns with us in the offseason now as there was a week ago; a low one. Those two are wins. The situation with Vrana just sucks, but it is what it is, he clearly wasn't professional enough for the organization's standards. In the end we made the best out of a bad situation and we're geared up to have some leverage in the future.
Just saw the Wings were gonna trade for JVR and try to flip him for better picks (assumedly while packaging some of their own) without retention, and the league nixed it. In other words, they’d pay PHI like a 3rd and a 5th and try to get a 1st out of a playoff team. No idea if true.
I thought the same thing and it's the only scenario that made sense. If true it sucks that it never came to fruition.
via Sam Carchidi of Philly Hockey Now,
Philly reportedly had a deal with Detroit for JVR, but the trade fell through. Fletcher wouldn’t say what team was involved, but that he had a “conditional deal” a little over an hour before the 3 p.m. deadline. That club, however, had to first trade one of its forwards.
“It made sense from that standpoint, but all along, it was conditional on the other trade going through,” Fletcher said.
The team was unable to make the “other” deal, so the trade with the Flyers didn’t happen.
Fletcher would have even taken a fourth-rounder for JVR. He would have absorbed half of his $7 million cap hit, and even taken on another contract.
No one bit.
He said he “actively tried” to trade van Riemsdyk because he wanted a draft pick, and he also wanted to enable the veteran to play for a contender.
“I can’t control that end of it,” Fletcher said of other teams’ lack of interest in a power-play specialist who has nearly 300 career goals.
