A2Y- Wings Earn Their Grades

01/16/2023 at 9:37am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Here are the first-half grades:

Forwards

Jonatan Berggren: B+

GP: 28 G: 7 A: 9 PT: 16

Joined the team from Grand Rapids in November and quickly showed he belongs. A well-rounded offensive player who can create opportunities for teammates and himself and can finish. Like most young skilled players, he needs to improve defensively.

Tyler Bertuzzi: C-

GP: 12 G: 1 A: 3 PT: 4

Has yet to get untracked due to broken right and left hands that forced him to miss 29 games on two separate occasions. Hasn’t been the same impactful player when in the lineup, but that could be largely due to having to restart twice.

Andrew Copp: C+

GP: 41 G: 3 A: 20 PT: 23

I don't get to watch very many Red Wings games so my observation is very limited. From the games I saw Larkin is rated a notch or 2 high, coaching staff a notch down. Hopefully Bertuzzi will come around before the trade deadline so he has value. I also think they should trade Larkin for a good haul, try and resign him as a FA and don't overpay him...8 Mil max.

I would say B 'Double G is in the A category for me, he was expected to be in the AHL because he's exempt and instead he's up here, pushing 1st round picks and free agents off the roster. The kid just creates offense, and is not giving up defensively, unsure what more can you ask of him.

I'm giving the coaching staff a FAT C-/needs improvement.   This team acquired NHL talent at every key position, including in net.  Players that were in our top 6, top 4 and our starter, are either out of hockey, or playing in the AHL right now, and I'm not seeing much better play out of the team. Credit him (or Yzerman) for allowing B double G and the like to earn/grab/keep their spots, but the PP remains stale as does teh PK.  Of the youngsters, Hronek benefited, but others have not.

I also noticed the article doesn't grade Stevie, unsure what to make of the job this year, specifically inability to trade talent, use his cap space, walking the tight rope with Bert and Lark, even Walman is a UFA at season's end. Imagine all three walking for nothing to the highest bidder? Incomplete grade now, this deadline will tell us a lot.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
