A2Y- Videos- Special Teams Still An Issue After A Loss In Toronto

01/07/2023 at 10:28pm EST

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

It was a familiar storyline for the Red Wings: They lost the special team battles. Again. They gave up a power-play goal to Mitch Marner and then went 0-for-4 on the power play. On Detroit’s fourth power play chance, in the third period, the Maple Leafs had two quality scoring chances and Detroit had none.

Not long after that power play expired, the Maple Leafs used the momentum of the kill to take a 3-1 lead on a goal by Pontus Holmberg.

Over the past three games, they given up five power play goals and scored one. The Red Wings have lost each of those contests. The Red Wings are 0-for-9 on the power play over the past two games.

more on the game..

Below watch coach Lalonde after the game tonight and the game highlights.

Paul

from Nate Brown of Detroit Hockey Now,

Vranas initial reason for heading to Grand Rapids was a conditioning stint after being in the leagues player assistance program. Following the three-game action, Vrana was shockingly sent through waivers, leading to speculation as to whether another team would claim him.

None did.

Now, the Red Wings forward finds himself in Grand Rapids with just a point in five games. Will the goal scorer figure it out?

The key, according to Simon, is no surprise to any Red Wings fan who has followed the organizational philosophy: play well away from the puck.

The better he plays away from the puck is going to lead to playing with the puck and having more chances, Simon said. Its a work in progress. Well look at the video tonight and go from there.

If that work indeed progresses, Vrana could find himself back with Detroit.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Alex Tanguay been in charge of the PP for quite a while now? It's painfully obvious it's not working. So, you either change the coach or change the personnel. Which is the answer?

Most of the fan base has been advocating for years that we fire Blashill, maybe its time?

HippyDaveCalquakeold

I was just telling my wife the same thing, Cal -- but hey, we officially have more goals this season than the Avs, so that's a good thing, right?

Tanguay was the only coach not fired by Steve at the end of last season. Last year was his first to coach the PP. Obviously, whatever he is saying is not working. Time for a change.

If they see fit to bring Vrana back to Detroit, and I wont second guess, he would certainly add some punch to the PP and 5x5 scoring.

But it wasnt just special teams last night either, defensive lapses were still aplenty.

The title is wrong Paul. NOT Special is more appropriate 🤬

re: The better he plays away from the puck is going to lead to playing with the puck and having more chances, Simon said.

shades of 1995, when rumors of SY to Ottawa were the rage: https://www.cbsnews.com/detroi... speculation was scotty wanted to light a fire under SY to find his defensive game, along with his obvious scoring ability which is what transpired, and the rest is history.

V will return soon, and hell light em up. my concern is, whos going to protect him? wings need a modern day probie/semenko.
