The Detroit Red Wings are only slightly ahead of last season’s pace as they hit the midway mark on Saturday.

But Derek Lalonde has been encouraged by progress during his first 40 games as coach.

“The overall five-on-five play has been pretty good,” Lalonde said. “Probably the most sporadic up and down has been our special teams. We’re on pace for 90 points. I think anybody -- myself, guys in the locker room, the average fan, the media -- we all would’ve taken it. We got there at different routes sometimes with the ups and downs of results, but there’s some progress here. We’ve got to keep it going.”

The Red Wings (18-15-7, 43 points) have won two in a row against high-quality teams Winnipeg and Toronto and cap a three-game homestand Saturday against Columbus (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit)....

“We’re getting close to a fairly full roster and we’re 2-0 since we’ve had that,” Lalonde said. “With a fairly full roster before Bert broke his hand, we were 2-0 (at the start of season). In between there were some thin nights – six to seven guys out and we stayed afloat. We’ve given ourselves a chance every night no matter what our roster has been. That’s a sign of depth.”...

“We have to play a complete game to win,” he said. “If we get a bad goalie performance, if we’re sloppy on special teams, if we’re sloppy with our puck play, if we’re sloppy with our coverage, we’re not going to win. You look at some of the elites in our league -- I experienced a lot of that in Tampa, where we didn’t have to be at our best to win. We have to be. I think our guys understand that.”

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
