A2Y- This Is What You Call A Goal Slump

03/19/2023 at 2:16pm EDT

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Do the math when it comes to Detroit’s goal scoring efficiency and what you discover is that this is a club in the midst of a team-wide scoring slump. Those who recently departed are lighting red lamps. Jabub Vrana has five goals in six games for the St. Louis Blues. Oskar Sundqvist was tallying Saturday for the Minnesota Wild, giving him as many goals on the day as all of his former Red Wings teammates combined.

Pius Suter, the lone goal scorer for Detroit in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, was netting for the first time in 12 games. Jonatan Berggren has one goal in 14 games. Lucas Raymond is showing one goal in 15 games next to his name. Joe Veleno is goalless in 19 games. He’s scored once of the last 24 games and twice through the past 35 contests.

Filip Zadina has scored twice in 27 games. Dominik Kubalik shows two goals in 14 games and four in 23. Perron has scored twice in 25 games.

Even captain Dylan Larkin, who was hotter than blacktop in July during much of February, scoring seven goals in six games, has cooled off. He’s got three markers over his past 13 games.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"Why put him through the end?" coach Derek Lalonde said of the decision to pull Husso. "The game felt a little out of reach and he wasn't sharp. Obviously five goals on (21) shots is not ideal. It was unfortunate because he didn't have much chances on (goals) four and five, but he probably wants all three of those first three goals back. That was a frustrating game for him."

With the Wings in the midst of one of their busiest stretches of the season, and the coaching staff wanting to get Husso acclimated to a heavy workload, don't expect Husso to sit and work things out.

In fact, Lalonde was quick to say Husso would get the start Monday for the Wings against Florida.

"We're going to play him through it," Lalonde said. "We see a ton in Vill. We think he can be a very good goalie for us. He's shown that this year. We're going to get him beyond his comfort level and threshold and there might be some nights he's not as sharp.

"That first goal (Saturday) was a point shot middle of the net, and he hasnt given up that goal for a while. There's going to be nights like this as we keep growing him. He'll be back in Monday and I expect him to be sharp."

I reckon Yzerman might have overreacted to whatever the hell the issue was?

No way to know for sure.

He obviously has a drug issue, it caught up to him where it was visibly noticeable and they sent him to rehab.

He comes back and can barely play in GR.

They bring him back and play him in his usual spot and he barely plays.

Gets sent to STL where even the GM says they just want to help him get back on his feet because the STL GM is obviously up to speed on his drug use.

Vrana is motivated to prove he can actually play because otherwise he's going to be a poor drug user real quick.

None of this is surprising nor concerning because these kinds of people don't suddenly stop being a drug user and go back to being normal. He'll always have these issues and have to deal with them. They wanted to do that and maybe SY didn't want the distraction.

I am not really sure I buy the "drugs" thing.

Stuff like this only usually happens when a certain someone hits on the wrong girl, at least judging by euro soccer.

"I reckon Yzerman might have overreacted to whatever the hell the issue was?"

That is blasphemy! Yzergod will take away your hockey privileges for doubting him!

😇

I wonder if the situation was any worse than what Probert went through. I highly doubt it, since Probert was Jim Morrison on skates. A very good hockey player and one of my top three redwings of all-time but he had his demons God rest his soul.
