Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde wasn’t too familiar with Robby Fabbri, so general manager Steve Yzerman brought him up to speed.
“Steve’s brought up, ‘You’re going to like him,’ " Lalonde said. “I saw glimpses of it in video or playing them in the past, but until you have him every single day … He’s been as advertised from the previous management and staff. Hopefully, he can sustain it and stay consistent with it.”
It doesn’t look like Fabbri missed 10 months following ACL surgery, his third. He didn’t need a few games to get his legs back. He’s not playing the least bit tentatively.
He has provided energy, physicality and offense since making his season debut last week and was instrumental in a 4-1 victory Thursday over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena.
Fabbri scored his third goal in four games, a one-timer from the slot off Jonatan Berggren’s pass on the power play at 3:49 of the second period.
It proved to be the game-winner.
“Goals are one thing, I’m just going off more on getting back to my game, getting my legs going and all that and goals are coming,” Fabbri said. “Getting them in wins definitely feels a lot better.”

While the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins were playing the Iowa Wild on Wednesday, Jakub Vrana wasn’t. The Red Wings forward, given assignment to GR last week after clearing NHL waivers, was a healthy scratch. The player who drew into Vrana’s spot, Kyle Criscuolo, scored a goal as the Griffins lost 5-2.
The official reason given for Vrana’s absence was the AHL veteran rule. AHL teams are only permitted to suit up five non-goalies with 320 or more NHL, AHL or elite European league games played. However, the bottom line is that if Vrana was playing well, he wouldn’t be the guy the Griffins were scratching.
Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was opting to defer to Griffins coach Ben Simon when it came to Vrana’s healthy scratch.
“We’ll talk about everything, but when it comes to his team, it’s his team,” Lalonde said.

Some Toronto writers are suggesting that it could stem from a cross-check Matthews took in the back from Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn earlier this season. If so, Red Wings and Leafs fans could find themselves in the unsual position of being in lockstep when it comes to their disdain for Benn.
In was a Benn cross-check that led to the season-ending neck injury suffered by Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin in 2021.
Getting benched in the A, wow.
3 acl’s? he’ll retire if it happens again.
make him part of a package for a top 4 Dman – if you can find a taker.
before you let him go, take a large sample of his DNA for the training staff to use at their discretion..
