from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Following their 6-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators Monday, the Detroit Red Wings quickly put together a checklist of areas they need to improve upon in the rematch tonight at Canadian Tire Centre.
Tighten up defensively.
Take fewer penalties.
Be more physical.
The Red Wings (28-23-8) have lost consecutive games and feel urgency to come away with points during this two-game series in Ottawa.
“We let this one get away. I think it was just clear as day,” Dylan Larkin told reporters at the game. “Taking penalties, giving their skill a little too much time and space. We didn’t execute enough.”
The Red Wings entered the game as the third least-penalized team in the league but took six penalties. The Senators, with the NHL’s fifth-ranked power play, scored twice on the man-advantage (Jake Sanderson and Drake Batherson) during a four-goal second period that put them in control.
“We really gave ourselves no chance with six penalties,” coach Derek Lalonde told Bally Sports Detroit. “That team’s going to lose to nobody if they get six power plays.”
Below hear from Larkin, Chiarot and Lalonde.
Said Larkin: " I don’t have much to say about it. The officiating’s been interesting.”
That’s one way to put it. Team Captain can’t say too much about it.
Well, I'll say t for Larkin. The officiating last night was disgusting. Berggren gets a penalty for bumping a guy into the boards while Ottawa gets away with a guy taking a run at Walman from 15 feet away when the puck is already gone. And that was just one of many penalties on Ottawa that were ignored.
And Chucklehead should get a penalty every time he steps on the ice just for being such an absolute prick. He reminds me of a young Corey Perry — just as ugly and every bit as dirty.
They were calling ticky tack interference, but not straight up charging. A couple of checks last night looked a bit elevated as well.
The reffing took on a playoff level, until it didn’t. Highly inconsistent.
Two losses in Ottawa would hurt Detroit, but certainly not season ending. Long way to go with just a fractional difference between seven teams, none of whom has shown an ability to put together a defining winning streak. It’s wide open at the 3/4 pole.
If they lose tonight, they gotta at least move Bert. I hate to say that but it’s business.
Last night’s game is a good example of why I think NHL Refs should be required to have media availability after the game. It’s total BS to call a game like that and just get to head back to the hotel when you’re done.
Do we know if it’s the same crew tonight?
According to scoutingtherefs.com, fwiw, it’s a different crew tonight. Thank goodness.
Yep, Mike McGeough and Tim Peel.
Another McGeough??? It's like the first family of NHL officiating.
