A2Y- One Successful Road Trip

02/22/2023 at 9:02am EST

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

There were smiles packed among the sticks and skates as the Detroit Red Wings turned homeward bound, their confidence buoyed by having collected eight of 10 points on a geographically challenging trek that took them across the border twice and from coast to coast.

Two weeks ago they looked like they might be in the draft lottery; now they look like they might make the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Their formula?

"We know we can win in this league and we have a team that can win," Husso said. "So, it’s just day by day, have fun and move on."...

The expectation is Lucas Raymond could be available after missing six games with a lower-body injury. If so, the Wings will need to activate him. Robby Fabbri hobbled after blocking a shot late in Tuesday's game, so there was some uncertainty about his status. If the roster jam doesn't resolve itself via an injury, one option would be to send down Jonatan Berggren, whose play has dropped off a bit and who doesn't need waivers.

Jakub Vrana would seem to have earned a reprieve, at least. He performed well in his first game in four months, earning praise from coach Derek Lalonde.

"Jakub was good, created a couple chances, he had a couple looks. I thought he was connected with our group. In the other two zones, he did some good things, so a great step in the right direction for him."

Darren Dreger of TSN confirms the report from Elliotte Friedman on Bertuzzi,

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports the Red Wings are currently planning on holding to the pending unrestricted free agent, who is currently listed at No. 7 on the Trade Bait list.

"Soon were going to pull names off the Trade Bait list, including Tyler Bertuzzi of the Red Wings. Now, the decision has been made, unless something goes horribly wrong this week and leading up to the March 3 trade deadline, that they want to give this group in Detroit the opportunity to really push hard for a playoff spot," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "Theyre willing to take their chances on a contract extension with Bertuzzi on July 1. Again, a lot can change between now and March 3. But the Red Wings are trying to lock down a playoff spot."

The Red Wings, who are 7-3 in their past 10 including an important 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, have closed to within two points of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with four games in hand on the Florida Panthers.

"We just go day by day right now," goaltender Ville Husso said after Tuesday's win in which Bertuzzi assisted on the opening goal. "We know we can win in this league, and we have the team that can win. It's just day by day, have fun and move on."

Sundqvist should be sitting before Berggren does.

I'd Kubalik before I sat Berggren or Vrana again honestly.

Berggren is performing better than those players and Copp even, who is looking more and more like a Frans Nielsen with each passing day.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
