A2Y- Jakub Vrana Extending His Stay In Grand Rapids And Filip Zadina's Mindset Plus Post Practice Talk

01/02/2023 at 5:50pm EST

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Jakub Vrana’s return to the Detroit Red Wings lineup has been put off for at least another week because he has extended his conditioning stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Vrana will play three more AHL games this week, all at Van Andel Arena – Wednesday vs. Cleveland and Friday and Saturday against Texas.

“He’s going to use the full two weeks, which I think is good,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “I think he felt good about his last game and will play three more games this week.

“I think ultimately Steve (general manager Yzerman) put it on him, what he wanted to do, and it’s a credit to him he wanted to get some more touches that way.”

Vrana had no points, nine shots on goal and a minus-5 rating in three games with Grand Rapids last week.

Khan on Zadina,

“When I come back, I won’t be thinking about what happened before, how many games I played,” Zadina said. “Basically, I want to take it (his first nine games) as a preseason game. That’s my fresh start. The first game of the season will be for me the game when I come back. That’s probably the focus for the future.”

Its probably a good move keeping Vrana in GR for another week. Hopefully it helps his confidence and game legs.

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

With injured Robby Fabbri expected to return to the roster Wednesday, the Red Wings need to remove a player. On Monday, Lalonde was clear he wasnt thinking it will be Jonatan Berggren, Joe Veleno or Elmer Soderblom.

I do not see me taking one of those three out, at least on Wednesday, Lalonde said.

Those three players are producing, particularly over the past five games. They have combined for three goals and 15 points.

The Red Wings will have to decide on two separate issues in preparation for Fabbris return after sitting out the first three months of the season. First, they have to fit Fabbri into their 23-person roster and then must find a spot for him in a 20-person lineup.

If Fabbri is available and ready on Wednesday, we want to play him, Lalonde said. Hes an important part to our team both on the ice and in the room. If that is the case, post-practice tomorrow, were going to have to make a decision.

Lalonde said there has been much discussion about the situation. The advantage of sending Berggren, Veleno and Soderblom to the minors is that they are waivers-exempt. If the Red Wings try to send anyone else to the Grand Rapids Griffins, they would need to clear waivers.

GM Steve Yzerman makes the decision about who is removed from the roster. One possibility is Yzerman can clear up the Red Wings goalie situation. They currently have three netminders on their roster. Ville Husso is the clear-cut No. 1, and Magnus Hellberg has played the last three games because Husso was ill.

Alex Nedeljkovic, an unrestricted free agent, might be the player put on waivers. Theres a chance he could be claimed.

Lalonde said no decision about the cut has been reached.

Weve talked a ton, Lalonde said. Because of how well weve played of late, winning three of our last four, vs. some pretty hot teams, theres a lot thats going into it. Special teams will be a part of it. Play of late will be a part of it. I think fortunately, its going to be a tough decision, it may not even be the correct decision but obviously something will shake down here in the next 24-48 hours.

The second decision is which forward will come out for Fabbri. If the youngsters are staying in, the possibilities include Adam Erne or Pius Suter. But that is not a slam dunk.

My limited hockey knowledge leads me to leaving Berggren and Soderblom on the big club, with Fabbri and Vrana for sure need to be when healthy.  Does that mean Erne and Zadina and maybe Suter have to be risked on waivers and lost? Beats me, but the best long term roster management decision may be something different based on who is waiver eligible, tough as that may be on young players who have done well with their opportunities.

Probably not the right place to share this but....anyone watch the Bengals/Bills NFL game tonight? Shades of Jiri all over it. Oooof....I hope Hamlin recovers quickly.

Just send berggren and soderbloom down until you can find a trade or another injury pops up. To make a trade because you have to means you are dealing from a weaker hand. Keep Erne is is one of the few Wings that check and hit out there.

I guess trades are hard?  Imagine losing a young NHL goalie when there are teams that clearly need one for nothing, same with a Zadina or Pius Suter for that matter. Not to mention the looming Bert issue. Whoooo boy, good thing our GM's name is Yzerman.
