A2Y- Comeback Complete

12/28/2022 at 11:41pm EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"We had a good talk after one and we responded," Perron said. "We felt we could build our game and if anything, take it into (Buffalo Thursday). We found a way and after we got that second goal, the belief got bigger and bigger that we could make it a game.

"We found a way and it was great."...

"We left some missed opportunities with our compete in the first period and it got us in a big hole," coach Derek Lalonde said. "We were much better, we were excellent in the second and third (periods). It was a real good response to a bad period and we got what we deserved, and that's a full two points."...

Hellberg was a factor in Wednesday's victory also. Hellberg stopped Sidney Crosby on a breakaway early in the second period, then made a big stop in overtime that led to Walman scoring the game-winning goal.

"He was excellent on the big save on Crosby, and his best hockey was when he came up big in the last couple minutes of regulation," said Lalonde, of a Penguins' late push in the waning minutes. "He makes the saves in OT that gives us the transition to finish the game off. The guys wanted to play well for Magnus. He hasn't played a lot of hockey lately, not much in the NHL, and they did a good job elevating their compete."...

"There were two games tonight," Larkin said. "The first (period) and the second and third (periods) for us, and the second and third was some of the best hockey we've played all year."

Down 4-0, the Wings scored the last 5 goals.

Peron, Larkin, Hellberg, Walman and Lalonde.

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

The Detroit coach liked what he was getting from the guys who’s supposedly No. 3 on the Red Wings goalie depth chart.

“He was excellent,” Lalonde said of Hellberg. “Obviously he makes the save on the breakaway on Crosby, Despite not giving up much that period, if it goes 5-0 then we probably don’t have much of a chance.

“He was really good at 4-4. They had a little push and he made some big saves into overtime.”

What’s Next For Ned?

If Hellberg wants any tips on how fleeting success can be for an NHL netminder, he need only talk to Alex Nedeljkovic, the guy it appears he’s usurping as Detroit’s backup goalie.

During Wednesday’s telecast, the Bally Sports Detroit crew was floating the idea of Nedeljkovic going to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint in order to work out the kinks in his game. Nedeljkovic is 2-4-2 with a 4.09 GAA and .880 save percentage this season.

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Jakub Vrana had no points and two shots on goal Wednesday in the first game of his conditioning stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins, a 4-1 loss at Rockford.

It was Vrana’s first game since Oct. 15, prior to entering the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program.

Vrana is scheduled to play two more games with the Griffins -- Friday at Milwaukee and Saturday at home vs. the Admirals -- before returning to Detroit. He is expected to be in the Red Wings’ lineup Wednesday at home against New Jersey.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
