Having played hockey, and coached many teams of all ages, there are games where you or your team just doesn't have legs, it just happens, it certainly can have a cause, but could also not. 

We can say these guys are millionaire athletes, with formulated diets, schedules, etc. shouldn't happen, but it does, they are human, especially playing a physical 82 game traveling schedule with practices.  Its a man's league after all...  

It happens to good and bad teams, when it happens with a team like the wings though, that's where the lack of elite of elite star power shows.  A 90% McDavid is still on par with a 100% Larkin, it is what it is.
