from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
“He’s got a real rare combination of being hard and smart,” coach Jeff Blashill said Sunday. “A lot of guys that are real hard don’t always have the hockey sense that he has – he has great hockey sense, great compete. He’s got the long reach with his stick that creates turnovers. He just hounds the puck. He also is real trusting of his edges – he knows that he can handle guys being physical against him, so it gives him that extra second to have poise with the puck.”
Bertuzzi was penciled onto a line with Frans Nielsen and Michael Rasmussen for Sunday night’s game against the Kings at Staples Center (10:30 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit). Bertuzzi carried a goal and an assist into the event, having demonstrated his approach to work in the season opener when a shot deflected in off him as he battled around the net.
“That’s what I tell myself – just go to the net and you can probably bang in a couple greasy ones,” Bertuzzi said. “It’s good to work down low. Even if you don’t get points, you have to try to create offense.”
