With The #6 Pick In The NHL Draft

from Sam Cosentino of Sportsnet,

Many prognosticators, myself included, have experienced the same challenges NHL teams have in terms of seeing players live and in-person. As a result, and with the number of games played varying widely across leagues, this draft should be the most random I’ve ever been a part of — and randomness is entertaining....

Anyway, as of Wednesday night’s lottery results, here’s how I anticipate the top half of the first round of the draft to go.

6. Detroit Red Wings: William Eklund, LW: The Wings have taken an abundance of D the past couple years, and have a great connection to Sweden. Why not go to the most improved draft eligible player in all of Europe?

more teams...

I like the “overkill” at mynhldraft.com where they have the Wings taking goalie Jesper Wallstedt with their #6 pick and then taking Sebastian Cossa with Washington’s pick at #23.

That’s highly unlikely, but I am anxious to see if Yzerman will take at least one of those two with one of his first-round picks.

Here are some detailed evaluations of both goalies:

Jesper Wallstedt - Note that a couple of the evaluations are of Luke Hughes and not of Wallstedt. Weird.

Sebastian Cossa - It’s impressive that he’s 6’6” and 212lbs at 18.

If available I would like: Owen Power, Simon Edvinsson, Luke Hughes, or RHD Brandt Clarke—yeah he’s that good of a prospect—then Matthew Beniers, Dylan Guenther, Kent Johnson, Jesper Wallstedt… in that order.

who do I think they’ll take: Dylan Guenther (assuming none of the above d’men are on the board at 6).

I just really hope they use Washington’s pick (looks like it will be 22nd overall) and a 2nd rounder to move up and grab a player that they want. Cossa would be a good example. Aatu Räty if you think he just had a bad year.

It may not be the sexiest pick, but if we’re going to build towards a better future 2-3 years down the road, we need to ramp up our goaltending.  The best prospect in maybe the last decade is Jester Wallstedt.  Passing on him at #6 would, IMO, be an oversight with long term and avoidable implications.
