Time To Move On From Some Of The Aging Free Agents

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Darren Helm and Valtteri Filppula have played a combined 1,335 games for the Red Wings but might have appeared in their final game for the organization.

Filppula, 37, almost surely won’t be re-signed. It remains to be seen whether Helm, 34, will be offered another contract.

Helm said late in the season that he wants to continue playing. He spent most of the season on an energy line with Luke Glendening and Adam Erne, the club’s most consistent and effective combination.

Glendening, an unrestricted free agent, seems likely to re-sign with the only NHL club he has known. Erne, a restricted free agent who experienced his best season (11 goals, 20 points), likely will be signed to a multi-year deal.

The Red Wings might swap out Helm for a younger player like Givani Smith. He doesn’t possess Helm’s speed or checking ability but brings a different dimension with his physical play and net presence. Smith no longer is waiver-exempt in 2021-22, so he will be on the Red Wings roster.

I would take Helm on a one year deal over Bobby Ryan or Gagner. Honestly it is time to move from all these players. It is time to take a small step up from those level of players. I am not saying Yzerman should be trying to capture the elite players available during free agency, but a step up from what he received last year (Ryan & Gagner).

We know what we’re getting out of a 1 year deal with Helm Bobby Ryan or Gagner, not much, certainly nothing in the way of longer term building, resigning them is the Ken Holland way to do business, it is time to let them and players like this go.

Play the Boys II Men It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye song in the empty LCA, pour a bit of Molson XXX on the ice surface, and hand them a box to put their belongings in.

Then use our cap space to go solve another team’s (Tampa?) cap problem by picking up a nice young player, or picking up an older high salary player in return for picks/prospects.  Or…look at a younger UFA that might benefit from a change of scenery on a cheap deal, or a camp tryout of some sort.

Well considering Fil should not have been signed two years ago, yes… It is absolutely time to move on from him.

IF they are going to sign older players they have to be ones they are reasonably certain they can be traded for draft picks at the deadline. Ryan, Gagne and Helm might fit that, Filpula doesn’t.

I’m leery of signing ANY of them. The Wings need to use those extra roster spots and salary cap to their advantage. They aren’t going to get better bringing the same players back. Upgrade by taking advantage of the cap crunch and expansion draft. It would be foolish to sign any of these players as a first option.

They have to find a way to give Smith more playing time and they should be saving a spot in case Raymond is ready for the NHL.

It’ll be interesting see how Yzerman handles this. At some point more players will have to be moved out in order to upgrade the lineup. Helm can find a job elsewhere. The Wings don’t owe him anything beyond a nice goodbye.

Murray, as you correctly mentioned in the other thread, we have like 14 forwards for next year without signing any of the old veterans UFAs. I think only Glen was a part of that 14 forward group. Let’s not forget we still have Nielsen.

BTW
Nielsen should be bought out. The wings will save 1 million for 2021-22 season. The following season the Wings will only be on the hook for 475k i believe. Bye bye Nielsen.

I was surprised Ken Holland resigned Helm when he was GM. Nothing against Helm, but felt it was time to move on from him. The others? I agree on Bernier and Glenny being resigned. smile

There’s no risk for Chris I, and he saves 500k. Sounds like a good move to me.
