The Waiting Continues

/from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

The Detroit Pistons held their exit interviews with the media on Monday, less than 24 hours after the end of their season. The Detroit Red Wings have been silent since their season ended 10 days ago.

The lack of any availability since the Wings finished 19-27-10 on May 8 seemingly indicates general manager Steve Yzerman is keeping Jeff Blashill as coach. An announcement on Blashill is expected this week.

Blashill has been behind the bench since 2015, guiding the team to a 172-221-62 record and one playoff appearance, in 2016. But the Wings are in a rebuild and higher-ups in the organization have not been expecting the team to advance to the playoffs during most of Blashill’s tenure.

Blashill and his assistants are all on expiring contracts. Dan Bylsma is unlikely to return; he’s been in charge of forwards and the power play since he was hired in June 2018.

Could be that Yzerman is in negotiations with another coach and wants to announce both moves at the same time…

Could be waiting until the coach he wants to talk to is done with their season. Maybe there is something to the Lane Lambert rumor.

It’s been eye-opening throughout this process how terrible HSJ/Khan/Ted are at their jobs. Are they unable to get any info that’s not fed directly to them from Steve? I know this has been a weird year devoid of anything from the inside because of limited access, but are these guys able to squeeze out any details about what’s going on from ANYBODY?

They THINK exit interviews took place last week and ASSUME that Blashill was involved, but there hasn’t been a peep out of the GM/Coaching staff/players/skate sharpeners/etc? It isn’t surprising that these 3 “diggers” aren’t the hunters they used to be (or never really were), but it really is surprising that they’ve got NOTHING for two weeks now.

Does anyone know (I mean seriously know…not guess, not a suspicion) if Stevie kept the diggers in TB completely out of the loop there as well?

That would assume there are digger(s) in TB following hockey, so it’s a tough comparison, but I really wonder if this was something he did in TB as well.

NOTHING gets out about the organization unless SY wants it to.  It’s incredible and scary at the same time.

Well, then he’s certainly met their expectations.

I think it’s safe to say we’ll hear nothing until something is signed.

Paper, ink, sign…. wink

Joe Smith (literally) seems to be one I recall as being pretty good and a writer in Tampa that Yzerman gave some pretty good access to.  I think he’s with The Athletic now.

I’m hoping that SY is just keeping Blash around until “his guy” becomes available. Or until the team gets competitive enough to challenge for a playoff spot and goes through a losing stretch.

I don’t want to see Blash back but I understand the logic in either waiting for the right replacement to come available or waiting for a losing streak to shake things up. If Blash signs a 2 year deal, I bet he wont be the coach of the wings 2 years from now.

I wonder if SY would hire an assistant coach that he liked who could take over for Blash if he ever got fired mid season.
