Re-Sign Danny DeKeyser?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

He came into this season feeling strong and healthy, and has averaged around 20 minutes in 19 games, serving as a good veteran presence opposite Seider.

“Danny is a guy who is really smart, as is Moritz,” Blashill said. “Danny is not afraid to get on a rush but he’s also not afraid to stay back and let Moritz get on a rush, and I think the more Moritz is playing here, the more he’s in attack mode, and so you’ve got to make sure that the other guy is smart enough to read that and make sure he’s back, and certainly Danny is that.”

DeKeyser, 31, is in the last year of his contract. He said he hasn’t thought about his future beyond “trying to enjoy this season.” He, Staal and Nick Leddy comprise the veterans on the defense corps and all are on expiring contracts. It is likely general manager Steve Yzerman will keep at least one of them, which would still leave room for 2021 first-round pick Simon Edvinsson to earn a spot next season. Leddy, 30, projects to have value as a trade chip at the deadline. Staal, 34, was brought in by Yzerman and already re-signed once. He and DeKeyser play similar games, and on a one-year deal in the $1.5 million range, either could make sense.

Nothing personal against DK but he hit his ceiling in his second season and has just filled an opening.  I don’t think we’d notice him gone at all and I think that answers the question in itself.

ehhh, wouldn’t be the end of the world as they’re going to need to fill spaces if Leddy and/or Staal don’t come back and there aren’t two new NHL ready kids to join the blueline. Guess i’ll have to do some reading and see what other cheap vet options are out there as an alternative. Have heard good things about Sebrango and Newpower but without NHL experience they’re unknowns, McIssac has potential but can’t seem to stay healthy. Have Hronek, Oesterle, Seider and Lindstrom signed going into next year, gonna have to figure something out.

Only HSJ would think that. I love DK as a person, but he drags Seider down when they’re together.

DDK is an option but certainly not an automatic like he would be if Kenny was still GM. All depends on who is available and then only on a cheap one year contract.

DK missed 5 games, we won all 5 replacing DK with the guy many of us I am sure never heard about.

Was DDK missed during his absence? No.

Re-signing DDK should be very low priority. I think they can find a better option. But if he is willing to take a big salary reduction for a single season, he might get in the mix.

There has to be room for Edvisson, if he is ready. DDK is part of the past, not much of the future.

I think we all like DK as a person, but for how much longer we should hear “DK lost the battle in front of the net”, “DK got outmuscled for the puck”, “DK allowed player X get to a rebound”, “DK shoots, goalie X is with an easy save”....
