More Goals Would Help

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin summed up his frustration with this club’s lack of offense.

“We’re competitive, we play good defense, we’ve gotten great goaltending, but to win games you have to score goals,” Larkin said Tuesday, after a 2-0 loss to the Nashville Predators at Little Caesars Arena....

“I don’t really look at it that way; I’m not comparing one year to the next,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “I think we’re a better hockey team. We’re playing with more structure. Because of that, we’re in games. Lots of games I felt we had enough chances to score. I did not feel that way tonight because I think our will was at 80 percent and not 100 percent.”

Larkin cited not being hard enough at the Nashville net. Pekka Rinne made 24 saves for his 59th career shutout but face many quality chances.

“We had some looks, but we weren’t hungry enough around their net,” Larkin said.

Undoubtedly this is true.  Somewhat the product of focusing on team defense (and turning offensive-minded dynamos into two-way players, though I do agree this is the correct long term path for creating a consistent team capable of winning in the post-season).

I don’t have a lot of positives to say about our current coaching staff, but I did think of one.  Penalties (especially really really dumb penalties) seem to be significantly down this year.  In a season without much of a training camp, a focus on “don’t do dumb things in front of the officials” seems to be one of the things a coaching staff could actually accomplish on a team that’s trying to develop an identity.

I would say, somewhat snarkily, that DeKeyser needs to be sent to the PERMANENT Taxi Squad !

The guy has ALWAYS been way over-valued in the eyes of many in this town and that fact has always blown my mind !

When he first arrived, he could skate pretty well…but he has NEVER offered anything of value on offense or on D ! ...and worst of all, for a pretty large human, he is a puss-boy on the ice !

Enough of the waivers protocols, Just cut him….and take the hit for the compensation owed !
