more interested in locking up several RFA’s long-term: Hronek, Vrána, and ‘lil Bert in order of importance.

The Wings need to spend $9.965M to get to the cap floor of $60.2M. And while we’re on the subject—why are the Wings a cap floor team during a flat cap with plenty of space to weaponize—let alone a cap floor team? Either because Cheap Illitch (Chris’ nickname among those I talk to) or because there is a plan to Fight for (Shane) Wright.

Lets all hope it isn’t because of the former or this organization will be in trouble long term. And the worst part is none of these press conferences are going to be able to answer that question.

Yzerman says Veleno and Raymond must earn a job at camp, they are not penciled in.

Larkin will be ready for camp, expects the defense to be more mobile and add a little more offense.

Guess they’re all going to GR since Blash will do that regardless of how they play.

Here are my notes:

pius is a young, playmaking center - big need for this team
doesnt necessarily value offensive improvement vs. improvement in all areas
will not leave spot open for young players by default. if they are ready, they will figure out a solution. would rather the young players be better than a vet

still looking at a few things up front, one player maybe 2.

oesterle - versatile. PP, PK, good skater

8 defenseman including Seider. If he is in top 6, he will play. Not sure how much we’d want him in press box. We expect him to make a good push.

suter - skilled guy, hockey sense, versatile

veleno - young prospect competing for a job, got stronger overseas. looked pretty good in the NHL, but not penciled into the roster
wants him to play well, contribute, succeed in the NHL. work ethic and attitude are positives. Wants Veleno to not give the staff any choice but to keep him

euro prospects - braanstrom available, soderblom, edvinson, vero in euorpe

Raymond - very high hopes, pretty good year in Sweden, but we’ll see. Bright future.

Hopes the team is better this year, younger players playing bigger roles can sometimes be a challenge. Back end stronger, mobile, more offense.
Suter + healthy tuzzi hopefully leads to more offense and wins.

Larkin - progressing fine. Expected to be ready for TC

Gagner - versatile, responsible defensively + PK/PP. can play any forward position. good pro, great attitude, comfortable with role.

free agency market - was crazy, more active, more movement. seattle makes it harder to find impact players, everyone had to be more aggressive

goalies in free agency - hard to plan for free agency, “you just don’t know.” exploring the trades for Leddy and Ned was worth it. Going to market probably wasnt realistic

marc staal/NMC - he cant be moved without his permission. He has a familyx, he wants to play and not uproot family. He likes it here, wanted to have an NMC for his family.
gotta make consessions for vets. Not signing him to trade him, want him to play on left side and be a good leader.

Witkowski - he can play wing, rugged, hard nosed, give us depth. Flexibility, leadership, tough as nails

Pearson - he can compete for the 4th line job. did well in GR, made a step forward. no waivers. How much will he play if he wins the job?

(bob wojnowski) Face of the franchise - group of good young prospects - cossa, edvinsson, raymond, Seider. Mentions Pastrnak who is a superstar drafted at 25th
Won’t say if someone is a sure fire superstar, but group of good prospects.

top players rarely get to free agency. Tavares is the biggest name recently. Owen Power chance to be a really good player. A McDavid/Matthews wasnt available this draft, but thats not to say Power won’t be great

lottery luck - need luck in the lottery, our hasnt been great. as much as he’d love to a get a 1st or 2nd, we just need to get lucky. Will stick with process and will have to find great players where they land. Eventually, they will draft later and will have to continue to find good players
Pietrangelo was highest pick at #4 when they won the cup. They had Raymond at 4. Kucherov was 57? Pastrnak 25, Bergeron early 2nd round. Marchand 4th.

I know I am one of the people who shouted for Pius but I think people’s scoring expectations may be a little high. Let’s not forget he played between Debricat and Kane most of last season. I think he has tons of skill and should do well but I would temper expectations some.

I was also hoping Stevie would go after Michael Bunting but he signed with his hometown team: The Leafs.

So there’s no prospect tournament this year, but they’ll go straight into training camp in Detroit instead of Traverse City, right?  Hopefully, this is just a one year thing.

SYF, first off I have heard nothing about Traverse City but today one of the questions from the media, or Yzerman himself, mentioned TC and no rebuttal was given, so who knows.

For sure no prospect tourney per Yzerman a few days ago.

SYF's avatar

Thanks, Boss.  The prospects tourney would have been great fun and an outlet so we can see the new Wings and previously drafted Wings get a chance to show the varsity they can play big league hockey.  The effort and enthusiasm in that tourney is fantastic.  And I do feel pretty bad for TC as a village as they’ve been without it for two years now.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Dan Renouf to a one-year contract and defenseman Luke Witkowski to a two-year contract.

Renouf, 27, spent a majority of the 2020-21 season with the Colorado Avalanche, earning his first NHL action since making his debut with Detroit during the 2016-17 campaign. In 18 games with the Avalanche, Renouf recorded three points (0-3-3), 16 penalty minutes, 20 hits and 12 shots on goal in 10:10 average time on ice. He also appeared in five games for the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles, tallying three points (1-2-3) and four penalty minutes. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Red Wings on March 10, 2016, Renouf played 146 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins between 2015-18, helping deliver the franchise’s second Calder Cup championship in 2017.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman is a veteran of 279 AHL games between the Griffins, Charlotte Checkers and Eagles, totaling 72 points (10-62-72), a plus-44 rating and 390 penalty minutes. He’s also added eight points (3-5-8), a plus-18 rating and 48 penalty minutes in 36 career AHL playoff games and became a two-time Calder Cup champion after helping Charlotte capture the title in 2018-19. A native of Ajax, Ontario, Renouf played three seasons at the University of Maine before turning pro at the end of the 2015-16 season, notching 38 points (10-28-38), a plus-14 rating and 72 penalty minutes from 2013-16. Renouf also logged two seasons in the United States Hockey League with the Youngstown Phantoms, registering 43 points (11-32-43), a plus-35 rating and 136 penalty minutes in 115 games from 2011-13.

Witkowski, 31, served as captain of the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch in 2020-21, posting two points (0-2-2), a plus-eight rating and 32 penalty minutes in 14 games before his season was cut short due to injury. In 2019-20, Witkowski appeared in 12 games with the eventual Stanley Cup-champion Tampa Bay Lightning, logging three points (1-2-3) and 13 penalty minutes while adding six points (2-4-6), a plus-12 rating and 63 penalty minutes in 29 games with the Crunch. The Holland, Mich., native previously spent two seasons with the Red Wings from 2017-19, picking up six points (1-5-6) and 86 penalty minutes in 65 games. Over eight professional seasons, Witkowski has notched 13 points (2-11-13) and 162 penalty minutes in 131 NHL games between Detroit and Tampa Bay and 47 points (9-38-47), a plus-32 rating and 619 penalty minutes in 261 AHL games, all with Syracuse.

Originally drafted by the Lightning in the sixth round (160th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Witkowski spent four seasons at Western Michigan University, where he won a CCHA championship in 2012 with Jeff Blashill as his head coach and was teammates with Red Wings defensemen Danny DeKeyser (2010-13) and Jordan Oesterle (2011-13). Witkowski was also a CCHA Second-Team All-Star as a senior in 2013 prior to signing his first professional contract, and ended his collegiate career with 38 points (7-31-38), a plus-seven rating and 235 penalty minutes in 152 games from 2009-13. Witkowski also spent two seasons in the USHL from 2007-09, combining for 35 points (9-26-35), a plus-20 rating and 257 penalty minutes in 113 games between the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets and the Fargo Force, where he served as captain in 2008-09 and was a USHL All-Star.

The last I heard, the Prospect Developmental Camp that they usually hold every year was cancelled, but the TC tournament is still on as long as they can get enough teams involved.  This is week old info, may be irrelevant if newer info is available.

Sounds like he held his own as a rookie taking top pair matchups. Lots of potential, especially if we slot him 2C with Vrana and Zadina on his flanks. CBA definitely improve from .5ppg. Let’s hope.

Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“I hope we’re better,” Yzerman said. “It’s the day after the first day of free agency; I think for the most part every team sits back and you look at your board and say, ‘I think we’re a better hockey team.’ I do.

“We’re going to have some younger players playing bigger roles. Sometimes that can be a challenge. I think our back end is a little stronger, a little bit more mobile, maybe a little bit more offense out of it. Having (Pius) Suter with a healthy Tyler Bertuzzi, I think we’ll get a little bit more offensive output from everyone. I hope that translates to wins. But I can’t guarantee it.”

Suter is their biggest addition at forward. He should fill the second-line center spot after collecting 14 goals and 31 points in 55 games as a rookie with Chicago, which didn’t tender him a qualifying offer.

“He’s 25, fits into the same age group as pretty much all of our core as we try to transition young players onto the team in a year, two, three years from now,” Yzerman said. “He’s an offensive-minded, playmaking centerman, which was a real need. He’s got good hands, good hockey sense.”

The Red Wings ranked second-to-last in the NHL in goals per game. Suter, a healthy Bertuzzi and Dylan Larkin, having Jakub Vrana for a full season and growth from young players like Filip Zadina could help them be more productive. Yzerman said Larkin, who missed the final nine games due to a neck injury, will be ready for the start of training camp.

Yzerman said former first-round picks Joe Veleno (30th in 2018) and Lucas Raymond (fourth in 2020) will compete for roster spots in training camp but will only be on the team if they have regular, prominent roles.

Gotta re-sign TyBert first and then all your relevant RFAs.  Hopefully, they’ll get that done before the month is out.

Making players earn a spot, not handing something to them, I think that emulates just about every successful coach and organization developing elite talent

It’s not that they simply have to beat out a vet: it’s that they have to be much, much better than the vet. Then not make a single mistake or be pulled from having TOI. Then finally be over 20 years old or they will be ELC slid no matter what…and on a rebuilding team that makes for a product that has been frankly hard to watch.

It’s one thing for a successful organization that is Cup competitive to “over-ripen” the prospects: its another for a bottom dweller to purposely hold back prospects for an extra year of “service time.”
