DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today acquired center Hayden Verbeek and Ottawa’s fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Jon Merrill.

Verbeek, 23, has appeared in seven games this season for the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket, contributing three points (1-2-3) and a plus-four rating. He began this season with HC Banska Bystrica in the top Slovakian professional league, scoring two goals in four games before returning to North America. The 5-foot-10, 183-pound forward has skated in 61 AHL games with Laval over his three professional seasons, registering 10 points (5-5-10) and 19 penalty minutes. Verbeek has also skated in 25 career ECHL games between the Maine Mariners and Adirondack Thunder, logging 22 points (5-17-22), a plus-seven rating and six penalty minutes.

Originally signed by Montreal as an undrafted free agent on March 25, 2018, Verbeek spent parts of five seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds from 2013-18, logging 136 points (59-77-136), a plus-50 rating and 114 penalty minutes in 250 games. He also logged 20 points (7-13-20), a plus-13 rating and 37 penalty minutes in 45 career OHL postseason games. A native of Kingston, Ontario, Verbeek is the nephew of former Detroit forward (1999-01) and current Red Wings assistant general manager Pat Verbeek.

Having acquired three draft picks over the last three days, the Red Wings are up to 20 draft picks combined between the 2021 and 2022 NHL Entry Drafts after selecting an NHL-high 33 players over the last three Entry Drafts (2018-20). For this summer’s 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Detroit has its own pick in the first six rounds, in addition to two additional second-round choices (Edmonton and NY Rangers) and one extra pick in the third (Vegas), fourth (Tampa Bay) and fifth (Ottawa) rounds. In the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Red Wings have their own picks in all seven rounds plus two additional selections in the fourth round (Colorado and Vegas)

Anyone keeping count:  that’s 20 picks for the Wings over the next two draft years.

:smh:

I don’t think he’s done, neither.  To include 2023 draft per CapFriendly, Yzerman has this available for him:

2021:  7 rounds, 11 picks (no seventh round pick)
2022:  7 rounds, 9 picks
2023:  7 rounds, 7 picks

27 picks over 21 rounds.

Wings piling up a haul I don’t think anyone has ever seen before.

As there was a bidding war reported for Merrill, I was hoping for 3rd rounder, but it does not matter really

Honestly I haven’t paid attention to the minors the last couple years.  Hows the draft classes looking?

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Take it from Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill, the Montreal Canadiens made a nice addition by acquiring defenseman Jon Merrill Sunday for a 2021 fifth-round pick.

“I thought whoever ended up trading for Johnny, if somebody did, they would get a real good addition,” Blashill said. “I think he’s a good player. He’s a jack-of-all trades, can play the left side, right side, kill penalties, up and down your lineup. Most importantly for me is he’s got confidence and moxie of a guy you want in those big, pressure situations in the playoffs. He’s not going to be one bit afraid of the moment. He’s going to seize the moment.

“He was an excellent pro, did an excellent job for us.”

The move gives the Red Wings 11 selections so far in this year’s draft, including three in the second round and two each in the third, fourth and fifth rounds. They have nine picks in the 2022 draft.

Montreal has set the standard for loading up on mid-round picks;
they had plenty to spare.

I’m not sure about a 5th for a guy who supposedly had good underlying numbers and was repeatedly praised; who was reported to have multiple teams interested.

You never know: these later picks can mean you can throw one in and get to a guy touted as a second rounder who unexpectedly dropped; you can take more chances.

I’m wondering if the org really thought they needed Hayden Verbeek in the minors; if they think he is undervalued and has some of his uncle’s determination and edge and can influence other players? The NHL is a really small world in some ways with families being intertwined and sharing experience around the game. But in less than a year, we spend a pick on a son and a nephew of top staffers in the front office. Maybe what they know about the player makes them worth a shot at whatever marginal use of trade assets. What was the price from Montreal without Verbeek - a 4th?

I am mildly shock also Lefty the Wings only received a 5th round pick and a low-end prospect. I thought a minimum 4th rounder.

But at least now the kids will get some better minutes.

Would have preferred a 4th rounder as well. But prefer a 5th round pick as opposed to nothing.

Very underwhelming return for a guy being sought after, low salary and all the other stuff Blashill waxed poetic about.

We needed to move bodies to get our kids a look. Ok but what about Staal? I hope this isn’t a sign that he’s not getting the interest we hoped he would, rather yzerman showing multiple teams that he no longer “has to” move someone, or… maybe a real def prospect is coming back in a package

Must be the other deals wanted Steve to retain salary and he has a bigger deal in the wings and he needs that slot. That’s what I can hope anyway.

Hmmmm got to say that it’s going to be a hard year to determine talent for the draft, wonder how the scouts are going to operate.  A European draft??  How many big tourney? other than the world juniors ?  I suppose you can depend on the countries teams to choose and know their talent.

Dunno, Jeff.  But I forgot that there is also that “free draft picks” of undrafted college players (i.e. DeKeyser, Vesey, et al.).

I keep waiting to hear Saint Stevie the Red announce from the beach in Costa Rica that he traded the whole team, Zamboni, and coach for three 4th round picks and “Earl” the locker room painter.  See ya’all in the fall!
