So no goalie in the draft?

Also, Carolina has no goalies signed

Kind of interesting that SY is trading picks instead getting picks, so maybe he thinks the team cam turn the corner sooner than later

I think a 3rd rounder is pretty cheap for a 25 year old RFA goalie that could be around 5+ years. Carolina used a 2nd to draft him

If Stevie is parting with some picks…good or bad…that should tell us what he thinks of this year’s draft.

Not that good at all.  But I would want him to muscle in on the ‘22 and ‘23 drafts.  There is expected to be some talent that are reportedly waaay better than this year’s class.

The way we played last 3 months plus Leddy and Bert, we might not get a super high pick for next season

Ned is largely unproven (less than 40 GP), and is coming to a….poor team. But if he can be, at minimum, a quality starter for the next 5-7 years…this is a trademark Yzerbomb.

Still having Greiss for another year, whom finally got up to speed late spring…

That’s fairly solid.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Vegas’ third-round pick (94th overall) in the upcoming 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Additionally, the Red Wings agreed to terms with Nedeljkovic on a two-year contract.

Nedeljkovic, 25, finished third in Calder Trophy voting and made the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2020-21 after appearing in 23 games for the Hurricanes, posting a 15-5-3 record, 1.90 goals-against average, 0.932 save percentage and three shutouts. Among goalies who played in more than 10 games in 2020-21, Nedeljkovic led the NHL in both goals-against average and save percentage and tied for sixth in shutouts. The fifth-year pro also played in nine games for Carolina during their Stanley Cup Playoff run, sporting a 4-5 record and ranking among the postseason’s top netminders with a 2.17 goals-against average (5th), 0.920 save percentage (10th) and one shutout (T3rd). Nedeljkovic has played parts of four seasons for the Hurricanes since making his NHL debut in 2016-17, logging a 17-7-4 record, 2.01 goals-against average, 0.928 save percentage and three shutouts. He was originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the second round (37th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Prior to making the NHL full-time in 2020-21, Nedeljkovic spent four seasons in the American Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers from 2016-20, suiting up in 154 games with an 89-45-14 record, 2.57 goals-against average, 0.904 save percentage and 14 shutouts, while adding a 14-8 postseason record alongside a 2.25 goals-against average, 0.917 save percentage and two shutouts. His decorated AHL career included a 2019 Calder Cup championship with the Checkers, in which he led the AHL in wins (34) for a second-consecutive year and goals-against average (2.26) en route to winning the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as the league’s top goaltender and earning a spot on the AHL First All-Star Team. Additionally, Nedeljkovic became the 13th goaltender in AHL history to score a goal during the 2017-18 campaign.

A native of Parma, Ohio, Nedeljkovic has several ties to the state of Michigan, notably as a teammate of Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin on the 2011-12 Belle Tire U16 team. Nedeljkovic went on to spend parts of three seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers and one with the Flint Firebirds. In 191 OHL games with Plymouth, Flint and the Niagara IceDogs between 2012-16, Nedeljkovic posted an 89-77-20 record, 2.88 goals-against average, 0.918 save percentage and 10 shutouts. He was named the OHL’s Goaltender of the Year in 2013-14 and earned back-to-back selections on the OHL Third All-Star Team the following two seasons. Nedeljkovic has represented the United States several times in international play, winning bronze at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship following a 4-2 record, 1.66 goals-against average and 0.943 save percentage, and leading his country to a gold medal at the 2014 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in which he led the tournament in goals-against average (1.84).

It’s really tricky now for Yzerman.  I think he’s looking for drivers this year.  All this losing should be over so he’s putting considerable pressure on Blash and his coaches to get going now.  In the meantime, I think he’s seeing enough for now to plan for those future drafts.

Congrats to you Wings fans. This is a serious head scratcher from the Carolina perspective. This guy had an amazing year and was clearly their future and they trade him for a UFA and a pick? I feel like there has to be more to this story.

NHL Jeff, there is still room on the bandwagon!

Heard the Canes offered him $1.5M, he wanted $3.5M.  That may be the problem.

Cannot imagine Canes could not settle on $3 mil if they really wanted him. And why would they not want him is a mystery.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

But with the Hurricanes facing a bit of a salary crunch, and not willing to go beyond a certain figure with the young goalie, they made the trade.

Nedeljkovic will split the Wings’ net with Thomas Greiss, and given Nedeljkovic’s age, somewhat cures the problem of not having a goaltending prospect in the organization.

Nedelkjovic, a Parma, Ohio native, played junior hockey in the Detroit area with Belle Tire and the Plymouth Whalers.

With Belle Tire, Nedeljkovic was teammates with Dylan Larkin, Kyle Connor (Clinton Township;/Winnipeg Jets) and Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe/Columbus Blue Jackets).

This is an interesting one - I don’t know that it necessarily means they won’t take a goalie in the first few rounds, but this is a “cheap” stopgap as a backup or potential starter going forward.

Looking at the list of UFA goalies, there’s some interesting names here.  Realistically though, Detroit is a tough UFA destination right now. https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/goaltender/ufa/

It’ll be interesting to see how Ned does though.  Looking at his stats, he took it up a notch this season but was pretty consistently around a .910 goalie prior.  https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/135425/alex-nedeljkovic

I remember that.  I don’t know what the price would be, but it would certainly be a changer for this team.  I still think it’s a bit early to be shifting out of draft draft draft, but with cap crunches there could be enough opportunities to move this team forward a year.

Goalies are so mercurial, I’m always in favor of letting another team gamble the draft pick on them. Wings can sign or trade for them once they’re past the development stage.  I know this kid has limited experience at the moment, but he’s already proven he can hang in the NHL. With Greiss the starter, he can be eased into that heavier workload.  And the kid certainly shows a lot of promise.

I’m happy with the trade. Just surprised to see Stevie moving 2 picks (and maybe more to come?) this offseason.

Mike McKenna tweet,

Nedeljkovic should have been promoted immediately to the NHL after winning the Calder Cup and AHL goalie of the year. Not doing so made it seem like the team didn’t believe in him. Now he’s traded. The handling of his career has been a complete mystery.

I think this is an excellent move. They had to acquire another goaltender and it makes sense to find someone who is younger, has NHL experience and has potential to be a difference maker.

In no way to I think this precludes Detroit from selecting another goalie. Any goalie picked is going to take a little time to develop neither of their NHL goalies is under contract long-term.

This one really could come back to bite Carolina whereas it has little downside for Detroit.

I don’t think Yzerman is done just yet. He’s just trying to get as much done before the draft/free agency as possible.
